The Wood Shield is your first defense, crafted at the Workbench from Wood, Leather Scraps, and Resin. As a round shield it can both block and parry: a well-timed block staggers the enemy and opens them to a counter in valheim. Learning to parry early with this cheap shield carries you all the way through the game, since the timing is the same on every round shield.
