Valheim is a gated game. Each biome holds a boss, each boss drops a key item, and that item is what lets you survive the next biome. Skip ahead and you get flattened. This page lays out the whole path so you always know where you are and what comes next.

The boss order is the build order. Mine the new metal, craft the new gear, and only then push the next biome. Rushing zones out of order is the number one way new Vikings die.

Meadows

The peaceful starter zone where you spawn at the Sacrificial Stones.

  • Resources: Wood, Stone, Flint, Raspberries, Deer hide, Boar leather
  • Threats: Boars, Necks, and weak Greylings at night. Nothing serious.
  • Goal: Hunt 2 Deer Trophies, summon Eikthyr, craft the Antler Pickaxe.

Black Forest

Darker pine forest with your first metals and your first real danger. See the full Black Forest page for details.

  • Resources: Copper, Tin, Core Wood, Thistle, Troll hide
  • Threats: Greydwarves in packs, and Trolls that can one-shot an unarmored player
  • Goal: Mine copper and tin for Bronze, clear Burial Chambers for Ancient Seeds, then take down The Elder.

Swamp

Wet, dark, and the first big difficulty spike. This is where a lot of runs stall.

  • Resources: Iron (from Muddy Scrap Piles in Sunken Crypts), Ancient Bark, Guck
  • Threats: Draugr, poison Leeches and Blobs, and Wraiths at night
  • Goal: Farm iron from the Crypts, upgrade your whole kit, then beat Bonemass with a mace and Poison Resistance mead.

Mountains

Cold peaks that will freeze you to death without protection.

  • Resources: Silver (find it with the Wishbone), Obsidian, Wolf pelts
  • Survival: You need Frost Resistance, either a Frost Resistance mead or a Wolf Fur Cape
  • Threats: Wolves, flying Drakes, night-only Fenrings, and tanky Stone Golems
  • Goal: Mine silver for armor and a Silver weapon, grab 3 Dragon Eggs, and beat Moder.

Plains

Open grassland that looks calm and is the deadliest mid-game zone.

  • Resources: Black Metal (from Fulings), Flax and Barley, Lox meat
  • Threats: Fulings and Berserkers, plus Deathsquitos that can one-shot you from off screen
  • Goal: Raid Fuling villages for Black Metal, grow Flax and Barley, then defeat Yagluth.

Mistlands

Endgame zone wrapped in thick magical mist.

  • Resources: Black Marble, Refined Eitr (the magic material), Soft Tissue
  • Survival: Craft a Wisplight from Yagluth's drop to clear the mist around you
  • Threats: Seekers, armored Seeker Soldiers, and the flying Gjall
  • Goal: Set up Eitr production, craft magic gear, and find The Queen inside an Infested Mine.

Ashlands

The volcanic south edge of the world and the current end of the line.

  • Resources: Flametal and new endgame crafting materials
  • Threats: Charred legions, Morgen, Fallen Valkyries, and full siege encounters
  • Goal: Survive the landing, build a foothold, and face Fader.
