Skills in valheim level up by using them: running raises Run, blocking raises Block, swinging an axe raises Axes, and so on, up to a maximum of level 100 each. Every skill makes its action better, for example reducing stamina cost or raising damage. On death you lose roughly 5% of every skill level plus all progress toward the next level (the rate is adjustable in World Modifiers). A No Skill Drain buff after dying protects you from further loss for 10 minutes.
