Valheim Finally Let You Rebind the Dodge Key, and a Patch Note Admits Diagonal Movement Was 30% Too Slow

Patch 1.0.14 rebuilt Valheim's keybinding menu, added a blocking toggle for accessibility, and fixed a stick input bug that had been quietly penalising every diagonal you walked on a gamepad. Here is every control and performance change since 1.0, and which settings to go and change now.

Buried in patch 1.0.14, under Bugs and Issues, sits this:

Intel

Fixed inaccuracies in stick input pre-processing that made it heavily weighted towards axis-aligned movement and 30% too slow diagonally.

Read that as a gamepad player and a lot falls into place. Running a diagonal was not just awkward, it was slower than running along an axis, and the stick was nudging you toward the four cardinal directions whether you wanted that or not. Nobody was imagining the drift when circling a troll. It is fixed, and if you learned to compensate for it over hundreds of hours, you now have a habit to unlearn.

That patch landed on 17 September, and it is the one that quietly turned Valheim's settings menu from a short list into something worth opening.

Go and rebind these

The keybinding screen got four additions, and the first two are the ones people have been asking for since Mistlands:

  • An alternate dodge key. Dodge is no longer stuck where it was.
  • Hotbar rebinding past 1 to 8. If you never liked reaching for 7, you do not have to.
  • Radial wheel rebinding, previously fixed.
  • Removing a keybind outright, so you can clear a key instead of parking it somewhere harmless.

On gamepad, Motion Sensor and Sheath swapped places. Sheath is back on its original button, and Motion Sensor now lives on alt plus Sheath, which is the right way round for how often you use each.

The accessibility setting nobody announced loudly

1.0.14 added a toggle for blocking. Hold-to-block becomes press-to-block.

For a game where blocking and parrying carry most of the combat load, holding a button through a long fight is a real barrier, and a toggle removes it. It is one line in a patch note and it is the most significant accessibility change Valheim has shipped.

Two more quality-of-life entries from the same patch: a Gameplay setting to skip the intro cinematic on startup, and a fix so that when "attack towards look direction" is enabled, your character's rotation snaps to the intended attack direction. Previously that snapping only happened with the option switched off, which is the opposite of what the setting implies.

Performance: what changed and what to actually set

Iron Gate has done the GPU work in two passes.

1.0.14 eliminated unnecessary GPU overhead in the case where tessellation is off, recalculated heightmap shadows to be both more accurate and cheaper, cut overdraw from the main menu's particle systems, and shipped multiple GPU improvements specific to Switch 2.

1.0.16 then did the obvious follow-up: tessellation is now disabled in the low graphics preset. If you are on the low preset you are already getting the faster path without touching anything. If you are on medium or high and struggling, turning tessellation off by hand is the single setting with the clearest return, and it is now a better-optimised path than it was in September.

Console players got their own fixes. 1.0.16 corrected inconsistent motion control activation on Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, and cleaned up banding artifacts on Switch 2 textures close to the camera. Switch 2 has had attention in both passes, which is what you want from the newest platform in the crossplay pool.

Two gameplay changes hiding in the same patch

Not settings, but they change how you play and they were easy to miss.

The PlayerBase effect on some build pieces was increased, so those pieces block enemy spawns over a wider area. If you build with them, your perimeter is quietly larger than it was.

Jotun puffs and Magecaps no longer respawn. Harvest them with that in mind, because the node you clear is gone rather than on a timer.

The five-minute pass

If you have not opened settings since launch:

  1. Bind the alternate dodge key to something your thumb already rests near.
  2. Turn on toggle blocking if you hold block for more than a second at a time.
  3. Turn off tessellation, or drop to the low preset, if your frame rate dips in the Deep North.
  4. Skip the intro cinematic.
  5. On gamepad, reacquaint yourself with Sheath, which has moved back.

The combat and weapons guide covers what to do once the controls are out of the way, the tier list ranks the 1.0 gear, and if your problem is lost gear rather than input lag, the save conversion is the thing to read about.
