Runes & Rune Essence
Runes are the ammunition for every spell in Dragonwilds, and you make them yourself from rune essence.

Every spell in Dragonwilds costs runes, and runes come from rune essence that you gather and craft yourself through Runecrafting. There is no shop to paper over a shortfall.
The types that show up across the spell list are Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Nature, Law and Astral. Astral is the one to watch: it appears in Surge, Snare, Uproot, Confuse, Vengeance and the Runecrafting conversion spell, which makes it the bottleneck on almost any build that leans on utility casting.
At 61 Runecrafting you unlock Runes To Rune Essence (5 Water, 5 Astral), which turns surplus runes back into essence. That matters more than it sounds: it means a stockpile of the wrong rune type stops being dead weight.
The chain that catches people out is that the heavyweight spells are not just high level, they are expensive per cast. Divine Rock wants 100 Earth and 100 Nature every time you place it. Planning to use a spell routinely means planning the essence supply behind it.
