Magic armour in Dragonwilds goes to power 8, the same ceiling ranged gets. If you have read anywhere that it stops at 5, including on this site until today, that was wrong, and it skipped three entire tiers.
Here is the part that settles it. A full Ancestral set, the magic route's power 8, comes to 106 melee, 109 ranged and 120 magic defence. There is nothing in the game with a higher magic defence number. The caster is not the squishy one.
What is true is that magic arrives late. Ancestral needs rune bars, which means runite ore out of the Scorned Wilderness, so a caster finishes their gear at roughly the same moment a melee player finishes Rune. The handicap people describe is a pacing problem that every style has, not a defensive one that only casters have.
The ladder, all eight rungs
| Power | Magic set | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Apprentice | Starter robes |
| 3 | Wizard | Brynmoor |
| 4 | Dark mage, Dragonkin mage | Ghornfell |
| 5 | Splitbark, Necromancer's | Fellhollow |
| 6 | Mystic | Dowdun Reach |
| 7 | Infinity | Umbral Sands |
| 8 | Ancestral | Scorned Wilderness |
Nothing reaches power 9 except Dragon, which is melee only and drops from Kuldra rather than being crafted. Ranged stops at 8 with black dragonhide, exactly where magic stops. The three-way comparison people make is usually between melee's 9 and magic's imagined 5, which is a six-tier error in a game that only has nine.
What the top three actually give you
Defence values are listed melee / ranged / magic, per piece and then as a set.
| Set | Hat | Body | Legs | Set total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mystic (6) | not listed | 38 / 39 / 45 | not listed | body only |
| Infinity (7) | 18 / 19 / 21 | 45 / 47 / 53 | 27 / 28 / 32 | 90 / 92 / 106 |
| Ancestral (8) | 21 / 22 / 24 | 53 / 54 / 60 | 32 / 33 / 36 | 106 / 109 / 120 |
The jump from Infinity to Ancestral is about 16 points in each column, which is a real upgrade but not a transformative one. If you are deep in Umbral Sands in Infinity and the Scorned Wilderness is still ahead of you, you are not under-geared. Finish the region you are in.
Mystic is the odd one out in the table only because the wiki documents its pieces separately and gives full stats for the robes alone. The robes are power 6, 38 / 39 / 45, with 1750 durability, and they shipped back on 31 March 2026 in update 0.11, so Mystic is the oldest of the three by a wide margin.
Ancestral, piece by piece
All three armour pieces come off the Armour Bench. The full set costs:
- 12 Vis Cloth
- 6 Black Dragon Leather
- 6 Rune Bars
- 6 Harmonised Compound
- 6 Draconic Vis Wax
Split across the pieces, the robes are the expensive half: 6 Vis Cloth, 3 Black Dragon Leather, 3 Rune Bars, 3 Harmonised Compound and 3 Draconic Vis Wax on their own. The hat is the cheapest entry at one of most things and 2 Vis Cloth.
Read that list again and notice what it means. Rune bars and black dragon leather put a caster on the same two farming routes as everyone else: runite ore from the Scorned Wilderness, and black dragons for the leather. There is no separate caster-only material path that lets you skip ahead, and no caster-only wall that stops you.
The weapons are a different bench
This is the detail that trips people building toward Ancestral: the Staff and Wand are not made at the Armour Bench. They come off the Mystic Forge, and they want magic logs and dragonstone rather than rune bars.
| Ancestral Staff | Ancestral Wand | |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | 1900 | 1900 |
| Rune Damage | 9.8 | 9.8 |
| Magic Logs | 16 | 8 |
| Harmonised Compound | 10 | 5 |
| Vis Cloth | 4 | 2 |
| Dragonstone | 4 | 2 |
| Draconic Vis Wax | 4 | 2 |
Look at the top two rows. The wand and the staff have identical durability and identical Rune Damage, and the wand costs exactly half of every material. Jagex pitched the wand as "a more mobile, fast-paced way to deal more damage", and the numbers say the mobility is free: you are not trading damage for it, you are trading a shield slot decision and half the materials.
That makes the wand the default recommendation and the staff the thing you build if you specifically want the two-handed animation set. It is the rare case in this game where the cheaper option is not the worse one.
Where the set bonuses change the maths
Magic's three-piece bonuses are not defensive, which is the actual reason magic plays differently:
- 1 piece: stamina regen delay cut by half
- 2 pieces: magic attack speed up 10%
- 3 pieces: magical crit chance up 15%
The one-piece bonus is the sleeper. Stamina pays for blocking, dodging and attacking all at once, so halving the delay before it starts coming back is worth more in a long fight than the defence number on the chest. A single magic piece worn with melee gear is a legitimate thing to do for that reason alone.
One contradiction worth knowing about
The official wiki's own Power level page describes a player's power level as running from 0 with no armour up to 5 in tier 5 armour "like steel", and stops the description there. Its individual item pages then give sets at 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Those two statements do not agree, and the wiki has not reconciled them. Everything above comes from the dated per-item pages rather than that overview, because the item pages carry stats, recipes and release dates and the overview carries a summary sentence that is clearly out of date. If you see the "power 5" figure quoted somewhere, that sentence is almost certainly where it came from, and it is how the error ended up here too.
If you are building a caster now
Train Magic and Runecrafting together, since one is useless without the other, and treat Mystic at power 6 as the point where the style starts paying for itself. Below that you are a nuisance rather than a threat.
Then skip nothing. Infinity in Umbral Sands is a genuine stop rather than a tier to leapfrog, because the gap to Ancestral is smaller than the gap in region difficulty between Umbral Sands and the Scorned Wilderness.
For how magic sits against the other two styles in a fight, our combat guide covers damage types and weak points, and the skills guide has the training order. The boss order tells you which region gates which tier.
Armour and weapon stats, recipes and release dates in this guide come from the official RuneScape: Dragonwilds wiki's per-item pages, read on 22 October 2026. Cover image is an official Steam store screenshot from Jagex, app 1374490.
