Dragonwilds Base Building: What to Build, and in What Order

The Build Menu runs on five material tiers and a dozen stations, half of them gated behind Vault Cores. Bed before bed roll, Lodestones at 80 Construction, and where you are not allowed to build.

Press B. That is the whole interface, and it opens onto the part of Dragonwilds that quietly decides how fast the rest of the game goes.

A base here is not a shelter. Nothing is besieging you. A base is a workshop plus a teleport anchor, and almost every piece of it has a price you cannot pay with wood.

The five tiers

Building pieces come in named sets, and the name tells you the material:

TierBuilt from
CabinAsh
CottageOak
CastleStone Block
KharidianSandstone
Baroquebeams only

You start in Cabin because you start with ash. Moving up is a Woodcutting and Mining problem rather than a Construction one, which is the first thing worth internalising: the skill is rarely your bottleneck, the supply chain is.

Sleep: the one piece with a tactical argument

Two options, and the cheap one is not the obvious one.

MaterialsConstruction XP
Bed Roll8 Ash Plank, 4 Rough Cloth24
Bed3 Stone Block, 1 Black Metal Scraps12

Note the inversion. The Bed Roll costs twelve pieces of processed material and gives double the experience. The Bed costs four items, needs stone and scrap you will be swimming in by the second region, and gives half.

What makes this matter is Home Teleport, added in 1.0, which returns you to your bed on a 900 second cooldown. That makes a bed a movement tool, and movement tools want to be cheap and disposable so you can keep moving them forward. Build a Bed at the edge of whatever region you are currently clearing, and rebuild it further on when you advance. Four items is a price you will pay happily. Twelve is a price you will put off, which is how people end up teleporting back to Temple Woods from the Umbral Sands.

The stations, and what they cost you

Here is the part that catches everyone. Roughly half the Build Menu is gated behind Vault Cores, and Cores come off pedestals inside Dragonkin vaults and nowhere else.

StationVault Cores
Blacksmith's Bench1
Armour Bench1
Fletching Bench1
Jeweler's Bench1
Mystic Forge1
Stonecutter1
Storage Ledger1
Well1
Blast Furnace2
Lightning Rod2
Personal Chest3
Lodestone1

The Blacksmith's Bench is the one to build first and it shows you the shape of the whole system: 6 Bronze Bar, 20 Ash Logs, 8 Coarse Thread and 1 Vault Core. Three of those four are things you gather. The fourth means walking a dungeon.

A Personal Chest at three Cores is the price that surprises people most. That is a full vault's yield for one storage box, so build the Storage Ledger and an Ash Chest (6 Ash Logs, 2 Coarse Thread, 4 Stone, and no Core at all) long before you consider the Personal one.

The practical reading: go and clear the three level 2 vaults in Brynmoor before you try to build a proper workshop. Roughly nine Cores, on a three-day respawn, which is a Blacksmith's Bench, a Fletching Bench, a Jeweler's Bench, a Stonecutter, a Well and a Lodestone with change left over.

Lodestones, which are the real reward

This is the best thing in the Build Menu and it sits at 80 Construction.

Cost: 32 Stone, 20 Rune Essence, 1 Vault Core.

A Lodestone is a teleport platform, and it only does anything once a second one exists somewhere else. Building your first also switches on the dormant Lodestone in the Temple Woods starting area, so your first build immediately gives you a two-point network back to spawn.

Teleporting is not free, and the cost is a formula worth memorising:

Intel

law runes = (distance in km) x (carried weight in kg), minimum 1

The wiki's own example: 8,000 metres carrying 400 kg comes to about 3.2, which rounds to 3 law runes.

Read what that does to your habits. The cost scales with what you are carrying, so a Lodestone is cheap for repositioning and expensive for hauling. And law runes need level 50 Runecrafting, which is the real gate: you can build a Lodestone at 80 Construction and still not be able to use it meaningfully if you skipped Runecrafting.

One more rule that is easy to miss: you have to walk up to a Lodestone and interact with it to travel. This is not RuneScape's teleport-from-anywhere network. It moves you between fixed points, which makes placement a decision rather than a formality.

Where you cannot build

Three restrictions, and the third is the one that wastes an afternoon:

  • Not inside instanced areas.
  • Not inside Dragonkin vaults.
  • Most of Dowdun Reach is blocked. The exceptions are The Approach, The Pastures, The Menagerie and The Courtyard. Everywhere else in the fortress refuses construction, so plan your forward bed around those four areas or you will carry stone up to the Bastion for nothing.

The order

  1. Crafting table in the tutorial, four ash logs. The game makes you.
  2. A Bed, immediately, and then another one every time you push into new ground.
  3. Ash Chest and a Campfire. Storage and Cooking with no Cores spent.
  4. Clear Brynmoor's three level 2 vaults. This is the real step, and it is the one people skip.
  5. Blacksmith's Bench, then whichever of Armour, Fletching or Jeweler's matches how you fight.
  6. Superheat at 20 Artisan before you expand further. It speeds up every processing station you own, permanently, which is worth more than a second of anything.
  7. Blast Furnace at two Cores when the ore starts backing up.
  8. Lodestone at 80 Construction, placed near the vaults you intend to re-run rather than somewhere scenic.

Construction levels almost entirely passively while you do all of this, which is why it is the easiest skill to raise and the easiest to under-use. Build more than the minimum early and the expensive stations are already affordable when you want them.

Winter 2026's Luminance update adds Prifddinas-themed building kits, the first elven materials in the game, so a base built now is going to want rebuilding then. The roadmap piece has what else is coming.

Sources: material tiers, station recipes and Construction XP from the wiki's Building page; Vault Core costs from the Vault Core page; the Lodestone level requirement, recipe, teleport formula and build restrictions from the Lodestone page. The wiki's Building page is long and partly truncated in places, so the station list above covers the ones whose recipes are fully documented rather than every piece in the menu.
