Dragonwilds Food: You Can Only Hold One Perk

Food in Dragonwilds is not a healing item, it is a buff slot. Eating a new perk food wipes the one you had, so the question is which perk you are wearing into the fight.

Here is the rule the game does not sit you down and explain: eating a perk food overwrites the perk you were already carrying.

Not stacks with. Not adds to. Replaces. So the fish you absent-mindedly chew while walking across Ghornfell can wipe the experience buff you cooked twenty minutes ago, and nothing tells you it happened.

That single mechanic is most of what there is to know about food in Dragonwilds. Everything below follows from it.

Perks, not nutrition

Food does two separate jobs and they are worth separating in your head.

Sustenance is the survival bar. Eat to keep it up, any food will do, this is not interesting.

Perks are the part that matters. A food can carry one to three of them, each with its own duration, and they are the closest thing Dragonwilds has to a consumable buff system. The headline one:

Intel

Knowledgable Nourishment, 300 seconds: +10% experience in all skills.

Ten percent across every skill at once, for five minutes, for the price of a meal. On a game with twelve skills to 99, that is the most valuable thing you can have in your stomach while you are gathering, crafting or levelling anything at all. It is also the easiest buff in the game to lose by accident, because any other perk food replaces it.

Internal Alchemy resets a perk's duration, which is the tool for keeping a good perk running rather than re-earning it.

The perks worth knowing

Durations vary a lot by which food carries the perk, and the same perk shows up on several foods at different lengths:

PerkDurations seen
Sea Life120s, 180s, 300s, 600s, 900s, 1200s
Grounded600s
Knowledgable Nourishment300s
Steadfast Stomach150s
Soul Food150s
Sea Legs120s
Frosted Flavours120s

Sea Life runs from two minutes to twenty, depending entirely on what you cooked it into. A Fried Sardine gives it for 180 seconds off a single Raw Sardine. A Fried Egg, Fried Salmon and Cadavaberries dish gives 900. If you want a perk to last, the recipe matters more than the perk does.

Others that exist without a clearly documented duration: Ravenous, Fungal Fortitude, Foreman's Feast.

Healing, and the three foods worth carrying to a boss

Dragonwilds' own strategy notes for Kuldra, the final fight, name three foods and the numbers are large enough to plan around:

FoodHealsNote
Stuffed Catfish200The biggest number anyone has published
Undead Delight180Carries Sea Life
Eggs Royale120Carries Sea Life

For scale, a Fried Sardine heals 30. The gap between a starter fish and a Stuffed Catfish is not incremental, it is a different category of item, and it is why Fishing and Cooking quietly decide whether the back half of the campaign is survivable.

One more rule from the same notes: infusions do not stack. Do not plan a fight around layering them.

Why this makes Fishing the best early skill

Two things point at the same place.

Infernal Rod at 30 Fishing costs 50 Fire runes and cooks each fish the moment you catch it. No raw stack to haul home, no second trip to a fire, and Cooking rises the entire time you fish. Thirty levels is an evening.

And the food that matters at the top end is fish. Stuffed Catfish is the biggest heal published. Sea Life, the perk with the longest durations in the game, lives on fish dishes. A build that ignores water is a build that eats badly for sixty hours.

How to actually use this

  1. Decide what the next hour is. Gathering or crafting means Knowledgable Nourishment. A boss means the biggest heal you own.
  2. Eat the perk food last, right before you start, because the next perk food you touch cancels it.
  3. Carry two kinds: one perk food you are wearing deliberately, and plain Sustenance food you can eat without losing it.
  4. Push Fishing to 30 and let Infernal Rod turn the whole supply chain into one activity.
  5. Grow your own. Uproot at 15 Farming harvests a radius in one cast, and crops are the other half of every recipe that is not a fish.

What we could not pin down

Jagex has not published a food table and the community wiki's is long, partly truncated, and does not line its columns up cleanly enough to read a reliable heal value for most dishes. The three numbers above come from the Kuldra strategy notes, where they are stated plainly, and the Fried Sardine's 30 comes from the food page's own intro.

So: the perk system here is solid, and the three boss foods are solid. A full heal-value ranking for every dish is not something anyone has published in a form worth repeating, and we would rather say that than invent one. When it lands we will add it.

The beginner's guide covers the five survival bars, and the skills guide explains why Fishing and Artisan come before anything in the combat tree.

Sources: the perk-overwrite rule, Knowledgable Nourishment, Internal Alchemy, the Fried Sardine and the perk durations are from the wiki's Food page. Stuffed Catfish, Undead Delight, Eggs Royale and the no-stacking rule on infusions are from the Kuldra strategy page.
