Farming grows the crops that feed Cooking, and Uproot at level 15 harvests a whole radius at once.

Farming is the stable answer to Sustenance: foraging and hunting both make you go somewhere, a crop plot does not.
Uproot at level 15 (10 Earth, 10 Astral) harvests every crop in a radius in one cast. Fifteen levels is nothing, and the spell turns the harvest from a row of individual interactions into a single one, which is why it is on the short list of things to rush early alongside Superheat and Infernal Rod.
What you grow feeds Cooking, and cooked food is what makes the back half of the map survivable.
