Dragonwilds stamps a power level on everything from 1 to 9, which makes it tempting to read gear as a straight ladder. It is not one. The best weapon in the game is power 8, not power 9. The best armour bonus is on a set three tiers below the top. And the single biggest upgrade available to a new character is a Fishing spell. Ranked on damage output, how well each one covers the weaknesses that actually appear on bosses, and whether you can realistically have it when you need it. A power 9 trophy you unlock after the final fight is ranked as the trophy it is.

Build around these

Rune Greataxe

Power 8 and 196 to 343 damage, which is more than the power 9 Dragon Scimitar manages. It is the hardest-hitting weapon in the game, it is craftable, and you can have it before the endgame rather than after it.

Adamant Warhammer

Not the biggest number, but Crush is the weakness on the Black Knight Titan, the Garou King and every Zogre, and those are the fights people stall on. The second weapon slot that saves the most time.

Strong

Rune Scimitar

Power 8 one-handed, fast, and it leaves a hand free to block. Melee armour gives +50% crit chance after a block, so a fast one-hander converts defence into damage in a way a greataxe cannot.

Magic Longbow

Power 8 and 118 damage, the top of the ranged tree. Pair it with Snare at 12 Ranged and weak-spot shooting, which has no crit cooldown, and most mini bosses never reach you.

Ancestral Wand

New in 1.0 and the closest thing a caster gets to an endgame weapon, pitched by Jagex as faster and more mobile. It has to carry a magic build on its own, because magic armour stops at power 5.
