Ashenfall is a continent of Gielinor that the MMO never took you to, and in Dragonwilds it has been under dragon rule long enough that the human kingdoms on it are ruins. You arrive with nothing, and the whole game is the distance between that and killing Kuldra, an ancient five-headed black dragon sitting on 240,000 health.
The route runs through six regions in a fixed order, each gated behind a story quest: Brynmoor, Ghornfell, Fellhollow, Dowdun Reach, the Umbral Sands, and finally the Scorned Wilderness, which 1.0 added on launch day.
What makes it read as RuneScape rather than as a generic survival game is the skill system. Twelve skills, each to level 99, each unlocking spells rather than just better numbers. Hitting 80 Mining does not give you a faster pickaxe, it gives you Divine Rock, which conjures a personal ore vein out of the ground.
Dragonwilds left early access on 15 September 2026 and shipped the same day on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Jagex Launcher. It is the first RuneScape game on a console in the series' twenty five year history. It sold over a million copies during early access.
