The Wild Hunt

Mounts are gated behind a single secondary quest, The Wild Hunt, taken from Vannaka west of Cathan in Bleakfields Valley. It needs partial completion of Withering Heights, which is what opens Fellhollow at all. You hunt nature spirits, white glowing terrorbirds in the willow groves of western Fellhollow, for three primordial hearts. Finishing it hands you the base Terrorbird, called with the ALT key, and pays 50 Soul Fragments per surplus heart.

Fourteen of the twenty one mounts list that quest as a hard requirement, so there is no route around it.

Terrorbirds (16) give +200 carry weight, which is the number that matters across a game spent hauling ore and essence. They come in sets of two or three per region, dropped by that region's headline enemies and chests: green dragons and Zogres in Fellhollow, blue dragons and Black Knights in Dowdun Reach, red dragons and kalphites in the Umbral Sands. Four more are bought: two from Death at 2,000 Soul Fragment, two from the Evil Emporium at 2,000 Infernal Fragment, and two from Domri the Merchant at 9,999 Garou Chit.

Magic carpets (5) give no carry bonus. They are much faster than anything else in the desert, take less fall damage and jump higher, which makes the Umbral Sands tolerable and makes them worse than a terrorbird anywhere else. All five need partial completion of Icthlarin's Little Helper. Two come from vestiges you study: Uzzerian Umber from Tok-Xil and Moonsilk Weave from the Kalphite Queen.

Both families extend your stamina while mounted, and both vanish the moment you take damage, are attacked, or start building Wither. A mount is traversal, not a warhorse.

Three mounts have no documented source: the Leafwood strider, the Manafem midnight and the Scorchweave Rug. They are in the game and nobody has published a route, which is why they are listed here without one rather than with a guess.
