Level Artisan to 20 and Fishing to 30 before you touch anything else. Both take a single session, both unlock a spell that removes a chore permanently, and neither has anything to do with how hard you hit.

That is the headline, and it needs explaining, because it is not how survival games usually work.

Why levelling order matters here at all

In most crafting games, a skill level is a gate on a recipe. In Dragonwilds, a skill level is a gate on a spell, and the spells are not cosmetic. 20 Artisan speeds up every processing station you own. 30 Fishing cooks your catch as you pull it out of the water. 80 Mining conjures an ore vein out of the ground wherever you happen to be standing.

Each cast burns runes, which you make yourself, which means Runecrafting quietly underwrites the entire system. It opens through Rune Mysteries, the fourth main quest, and a player who skips it ends up with a list of unlocked spells they cannot afford to cast.

The twelve skills

All of them cap at 99.

Prayer, Hunter and Slayer are in the game as planned skills but are not trainable yet. Two of them now have dates: Jagex confirmed at the Dragonwilds Summit on 3 October that Prayer lands with the Luminance update in December 2026, built around scattering ashes and burying bones, and Hunter arrives in 2027 with Song of Rebellion. Slayer has no date attached.

The order to train them in

First: Artisan to 20. Superheat costs 5 Air and 15 Fire runes and speeds up every processing station permanently. You are going to run those stations for the rest of the campaign. The return on twenty levels is not close.

Second: Fishing to 30. Infernal Rod costs 50 Fire runes and cooks fish on the catch. It collapses two chores into one and keeps Cooking rising for free. The best quality-of-life unlock in the game.

Third: Agility to 8. Windstep is five Air runes and the cheapest spell available. Better jumps and controlled descent, which matters a lot in vaults and more again in the floating-island Scorned Wilderness.

Fourth: Attack to 11. Tempest Shield prevents damage while blocking. On a game where stamina pays for blocking, dodging and attacking out of one pool, a block that actually stops damage reshapes every melee fight you will have.

Fifth: Farming to 15. Uproot harvests a whole radius in one cast. Small, cheap, and you will use it every in-game day.

Everything after that is build preference. Push Magic if you want Surge at 11 for a longer dodge, push Ranged if you want Snare at 12 to stop things reaching you.

The gathering skills are not optional

It is tempting to treat Mining and Woodcutting as background noise. They are the supply line for the entire power ladder, Bronze at power 3 through Rune at 8 and Dragon at 9, and 1.0 added new ores behind the top two tiers specifically.

One detail that saves time early: loose logs and loose stones give experience. You do not need an axe to start levelling Woodcutting, which is how the tutorial has you building a crafting table before you own a tool.

The high-level spells are a different kind of expensive

Divine Rock at 80 Mining and Vengeance at 80 Magic are real payoffs, but read the rune cost before you plan around them. Divine Rock wants 100 Earth and 100 Nature runes per cast. That is a base-side tool, not something you fire off in the field.

This is also where Runes To Rune Essence at 61 Runecrafting earns its place. The spell list leans heavily on Astral runes, which means most players end up with a pile of the wrong type. Running the conversion backwards turns dead stock into essence you can actually use.

Where magic hits a ceiling

Worth knowing before you commit to a caster: magic armour stops at power 5. Melee reaches 9 with the Dragon set, ranged reaches 8 with Black dragonhide, and magic has Splitbark and the Necromancer's set at 5 and nothing above them.

1.0's Ancestral robes and wand are the closest thing to a fix, a magic weapon type Jagex describes as faster and more mobile. It is a real option, but a pure-Magic run is still playing with a defensive handicap that the other two styles do not have. Luminance adding the Prayer skill in December may change that calculus; right now it does not.

For where each skill's unlocks sit against the rest of the game, the Dragonwilds spell tier list ranks them by what they are worth against how far you have to go.
