Ellen Joe has been a benchmark Ice DPS since launch, and the good news for new players is that her build has barely moved: the same signature W-Engine, the same disc set, the same mono-Ice shell keep working patch after patch. If you pulled her, this is the whole package.

How Ellen actually plays
Ellen is a burst carry, not a rush-in bruiser. Her whole loop is about building charge, waiting for a stun window, and then dumping enormous damage into a staggered enemy. She generates Flash Freeze charge through her basic attack string, and her enhanced bites and EX Special are where the numbers live. Ice is her partner here: keeping the enemy under the Ice anomaly (Freeze, then the shatter) pushes her damage up and rewards a team that keeps that aura painted.
That is why she is a quick-swap DPS. You do not hold Ellen on field the whole fight. You set up with her supports, bring the enemy to the edge of a stun, then swap to Ellen and unload during the daze bar's stagger window. Get comfortable with her dash attack and her assist follow-ups, because clean swaps are most of her ceiling.
W-Engine: Deep Sea Visitor first, then the flexible options
Deep Sea Visitor is her signature and the clear best. It boosts her Ice damage and hands her crit when she attacks an enemy affected by Ice, which is exactly the condition her team is built to create. It is a self-contained package: the crit it grants lets you lean harder into Crit DMG on discs.
If you do not have it, these hold up well:
- The Brimstone (S-rank Attack engine): flat ATK and stacking crit rate. A strong, attribute-neutral choice that works on most Attack DPS.
- Steel Cushion (S-rank): raw ATK with a crit-rate and bonus-damage angle on your first hits.
- Cannon Rotor (A-rank): the reliable free option. ATK% substat and a clean bonus, and it costs you nothing to build.
Match the W-Engine level to Ellen's level as you climb; do not over-invest a spare engine you plan to replace, the same logic covered in the leveling material priority guide.
Drive Discs: Polar Metal is non-negotiable
Run Polar Metal (4-piece). It boosts Ice damage outright and further boosts her basic and dash damage while the enemy is under the Ice anomaly, which is Ellen's exact damage profile. This is the core.
For the 2-piece, pick based on what your build needs:
- Woodpecker Electro (2pc) for crit rate. The default when you want to hit a healthy crit ratio.
- Puffer Electro (2pc) for ATK and a boost to EX Special damage, since a lot of Ellen's burst is her EX.
- Hormone Punk (2pc) for an on-entry ATK% spike, handy for a pure quick-swap style.
The full guide to picking sets and reading substats lives in the drive discs and W-Engines breakdown; this is the Ellen-specific shortlist.
Disc main stats
- Slot 4: Crit Rate or Crit DMG
- Slot 5: Ice DMG Bonus
- Slot 6: ATK%
Slots 1 to 3 keep their fixed main stats. Your substat goal is a balanced crit ratio (aim for roughly a 1 to 2 Crit Rate to Crit DMG split once Deep Sea Visitor's crit is factored in), backed by ATK% and flat ATK. Anomaly Proficiency does nothing for her, skip it.
The team: mono-Ice is still the blueprint
The cleanest Ellen team is all three characters pulling in the same direction:
- Ellen (Attack / Ice) is the carry.
- Soukaku (Support / Ice) buffs Ellen's ATK and applies Ice, feeding both the anomaly and Deep Sea Visitor's condition. She is the ideal free-to-play-friendly enabler.
- Lycaon (Stun / Ice) builds daze fast and shreds Ice resistance during the stun, opening the exact window Ellen wants.
This trio is a textbook example of how specialties and team roles fit together: a stunner to open the window, a support to buff and apply Ice, a carry to cash it in.
Swaps and alternatives:
- Nicole (Support / Ether) replaces Soukaku when you want defense shred and energy support instead of a second Ice unit. You lose some mono-Ice synergy but gain a strong debuff.
- Any strong stunner works if you lack Lycaon, though you give up the Ice resistance shred that makes Lycaon special for her.
Rotation
- Open with Lycaon and build the enemy's daze toward stun.
- Weave in Soukaku to stack her buff and keep Ice applied.
- As the enemy staggers, quick-swap to Ellen and open with her EX Special.
- Chain her enhanced basics and dash attacks through the stun window, then cash a Chain Attack or Ultimate if the meter is up.
- Swap back out before the window closes, reset the daze, repeat.
The single biggest damage gain for most players is not more stats, it is landing the whole burst inside the stun window instead of spilling half of it into an un-stunned enemy. Practice the swap timing against a Notorious Hunt boss or Shiyu Defense floor where the pacing is forgiving.
Mindscapes worth noting
Ellen functions fully at Mindscape 0, so do not feel pressured. If you are weighing copies, her early Mindscapes sharpen her burst and her sixth is a large multiplier, but the general advice from the Mindscape value guide holds: a well-built M0 Ellen with the right team outperforms a poorly geared higher-Mindscape one every time.
Get the Polar Metal set, slot Deep Sea Visitor if you have it, surround her with Ice, and time your swaps. That is the entire Ellen Joe formula. For where she currently sits against the rest of the roster, check the ZZZ tier list, and grab this patch's free Polychrome codes while they are live.
