The World of Orbis: Hytale Zones Explained
A guide to Orbis, the world of Hytale, and its themed zones: the temperate forests, the Howling Sands desert, the frozen reaches of Borea, and the Devastated Lands.
The Short Answer
Hytale is set in a world called Orbis, a procedurally generated land made up of many biomes grouped into themed zones. From the original vision, those zones range from gentle temperate forests to a vast desert, frozen reaches, and a corrupted volcanic region. Each zone has its own look, resources, and dangers, so exploring outward is how the game escalates.
Orbis at a Glance
Orbis is generated rather than hand-placed, which means every world is a little different. World generation is an active focus during Early Access, with a major overhaul (often called Worldgen V2) planned to expand how worlds are built, including much greater height. Treat the details below as the shape of the world rather than a fixed map, since generation continues to evolve.
The Themed Zones
Hytale's world has long been described as a set of distinct zones, each with its own climate and threats:
- Temperate forests (the starting region). Green, rolling, and forgiving. This is where new players find their feet, gather their first resources, and learn the basics.
- Howling Sands. A harsh desert of dunes, ruins, and tombs. Heat and tougher enemies make it a step up from the starting woods.
- Borea. Frozen tundra and ice caves. Cold is a real threat here, and the region hides rare materials for those who prepare.
- The Devastated Lands. A scarred, volcanic region tied to the darker corners of Orbis lore. It is framed as a late, dangerous destination rather than an early stop.
The Threat Beneath It All
Orbis lore centers on a looming corrupting force, often referred to as the Void, that gives the world its sense of stakes. You will encounter undead and other hostile creatures tied to this darkness, especially as you push into harsher regions. For a tour of who and what lives in Orbis, see our creatures and factions page.
Exploring Smart
- Start gentle. Build up gear in the temperate starting region before braving the desert or the cold.
- Prepare for the climate. Harsher zones punish the unprepared, so gear and supplies matter.
- Expect change. As world generation expands during Early Access, regions and their contents will grow. We update this page as new details land.
