Hytale Getting Started: Early Access First Steps
How to start playing Hytale in Early Access. What is available now, how to create a character, and the first things to do in the world of Orbis.
Hytale Is Now Playable
After a long and unusual journey, Hytale launched in Early Access on January 13, 2026 for PC (Windows, macOS, and Linux). The game was canceled by Riot Games in June 2025, then reacquired and revived by its original founder later that year, returning to the vision from the original reveal. It is now developed independently by Hypixel Studios again and updated frequently during Early Access.
Because it is in Early Access, expect the game to grow over time. Some systems are complete, some are partial, and new content lands regularly. This wiki tracks the current state and updates as the game does.
What Is Available Now
The current Early Access build is built around two modes:
- Exploration mode: the survival sandbox where you gather, craft, build, and fight in a generated world. This is the best starting point for new players.
- Creative mode: freeform building with the full block palette and creation tools, with no survival pressure.
A third pillar, Adventure mode (a story-driven experience with NPCs and quests), is planned to arrive after Early Access. See our game modes page for the full breakdown of what is live versus planned.
Creating Your Character
Hytale lets you customize your character with options such as hairstyles and clothing before you drop into the world. You can keep it simple to start, since the look does not affect how you play. Once you are in, the world of Orbis is yours to explore.
Your First Session
A clean opening routine makes the early game enjoyable rather than confusing:
- Gather wood by harvesting trees, then craft basic tools.
- Collect stone for sturdier tools and safer walls.
- Build a small shelter before your first night, when the world becomes more dangerous.
- Light your space and keep food and a weapon on hand.
- Mark your spawn with a landmark or torch so you can find your way home.
Where to Go Next
Once you have survived a night or two, branch out. Learn the timing-based combat system, try creative building, read about the regions of Orbis, and meet the creatures and factions you will run into. If you want to play with friends in your own space, our server setup guide walks through hosting.
