Hytale Adventure Mode Guide: Quests, NPCs & Progression
Complete guide to Hytale's Adventure Mode. Story progression, NPC interactions, quest systems, zone unlocking, and tips for solo and multiplayer.
What Is Adventure Mode?
Adventure Mode is Hytale's primary game mode — a hand-crafted story experience set across four distinct zones. Unlike Creative Mode (freeform building) or custom mini-game servers, Adventure Mode combines exploration, combat, questing, and survival into a structured progression.
The Story
You play as a hero in the world of Orbis, a land threatened by a cosmic force known as the Void. Each of the four zones tells part of the story as you journey from the peaceful Emerald Grove to the dangerous Devastated Lands.
The story unfolds through:
- Quest NPCs: Characters who give missions and tell the lore
- Environmental storytelling: Ruins, abandoned structures, and world details
- Cutscenes: Key story moments at zone transitions and boss encounters
- Lore items: Books, scrolls, and artifacts you discover while exploring
Zone Progression
Zone 1: Emerald Grove
The starting zone — temperate forests and rolling hills.
Key Activities:
- Learn basic mechanics (gathering, crafting, building, combat)
- Complete the introductory quest chain
- Unlock basic crafting recipes
- Explore surface dungeons and caves
- Defeat the Lich King (zone boss)
Tips:
- Don't rush through Zone 1. Learn combat mechanics here where enemies are forgiving.
- Explore caves for ore — you'll need metal gear for Zone 2.
- Talk to every NPC — some offer optional quests with unique rewards.
Zone 2: Howling Sands
Desert biome unlocked after completing Zone 1.
Key Activities:
- Navigate desert terrain (heat mechanics)
- Discover Egyptian-themed ruins and pyramids
- Complete faction quests (multiple NPC groups with competing interests)
- Explore underground tombs
- Defeat the Sand Empress (zone boss)
Tips:
- Carry water or heat-resistant items — the desert drains stamina faster.
- Pyramids contain the best loot but also the toughest enemies.
- Faction choices affect the story — choose carefully.
Zone 3: Borea
Frozen tundra unlocked after Zone 2.
Key Activities:
- Survive cold mechanics (warmth gear required)
- Explore ice caves and frozen structures
- Complete the resistance storyline
- Navigate blizzard events (reduced visibility)
- Defeat the Frost Warden (zone boss)
Tips:
- Craft warm clothing before entering Zone 3.
- Blizzards are dangerous — find shelter or use campfires.
- Ice caves have rare materials found nowhere else.
Zone 4: Devastated Lands
Endgame volcanic zone.
Key Activities:
- Endgame combat encounters
- Final story questline
- Endgame crafting with volcanic materials
- Defeat the Void Dragon (final boss)
Tips:
- Bring your best gear — everything hits hard.
- Fire resistance is essential.
- The final boss requires preparation — potions, food, backup equipment.
Quest System
Main Quests
Main quests drive the story forward and are required to progress between zones. They appear as markers on your compass and map.
Quest types:
- Story missions: Talk to NPCs, make choices, watch cutscenes
- Dungeon clears: Navigate through a dungeon and defeat the boss
- Fetch quests: Gather specific materials or items
- Boss fights: Defeat zone bosses to unlock the next area
Side Quests
Optional quests from NPCs throughout each zone. They offer:
- Experience points for leveling
- Unique rewards not available through crafting
- Lore and world-building — deeper story context
- Reputation with NPC factions
Tip: Side quests are worth doing. The unique rewards often outclass crafted gear of the same tier.
Repeatable Quests
Some quests can be completed multiple times:
- Daily bounties: Kill specific enemies for rewards
- Gathering requests: Deliver materials to NPCs
- Arena challenges: Combat trials with scaling difficulty
NPCs & Factions
Friendly NPCs
Found in villages and settlements:
- Merchants: Buy and sell items
- Crafters: Unlock new recipes (some require quest completion)
- Quest givers: Story and side quest starting points
- Trainers: Teach new combat abilities
Factions
Zone 2 and 3 introduce competing factions:
- Helping one faction may lock you out of certain quests from another
- Faction reputation affects shop prices and available items
- Story consequences based on faction alignment
On a dedicated server, each player makes their own faction choices.
Adventure Mode on a Dedicated Server
Multiplayer Progression
- Quest progress is shared for main quests — when one player completes a step, all nearby players get credit
- Side quests are individual — each player tracks their own
- Boss kills are shared — everyone present gets the zone unlock
- Loot is individual — each player gets their own drops
Server Settings for Adventure Mode
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Game Mode | Adventure | Enables quest system and story |
| Difficulty | Normal | Balanced for groups |
| Max Players | 4-8 | Best quest pacing |
| Enemy Scaling | On | Scales difficulty with player count |
Group Sizes
Adventure Mode works at any player count, but pacing differs:
- 1-2 players: Challenging, methodical, immersive story experience
- 3-4 players: Ideal balance of challenge and cooperation
- 5-8 players: Easy combat, good for casual/social groups
- 9-16 players: Very easy combat, best for building-focused groups who also want quests
Tips for Multiplayer Adventure
- Stay together for main quests — everyone needs to be nearby to get credit
- Split up for side quests — cover more ground, share findings on Discord
- Coordinate boss fights — don't enter a boss arena until the group is ready
- Take turns on NPC dialogue — one person reads/narrates, others listen (or skip — your call)
- Shared storage for quest items — keep a chest at base with materials NPCs commonly request
