There Is No Single Best Base, There Is a Best Process
The most common Windrose base question is "where is the best spot?" The honest answer is that the strongest base is the one that fits how you sail, gather, and fight. A great base is a working dock, not a trophy. Use the criteria below to evaluate any location instead of chasing one perfect coordinate.
New to the game? Start with the Windrose beginner guide, then come back to plan your home port.
Criterion 1: Direct Coast and Dock Access
Your ship is your main road, so your base should open straight onto sailable water. A location that forces a long walk to your dock wastes time on every trip. Look for a sheltered coastline where you can keep ship repair materials and storage close to the water.
Criterion 2: Nearby Renewable Resources
A base near a steady supply of wood, stone, and food keeps your crafting loop fed without long hauls. Proximity to copper is a major bonus because it gates fast travel and mid-game crafting.
Criterion 3: Manageable Threat Level
Scout the area for enemy pirates, zombies, and hostile animals before you commit. The starter coast is forgiving; spots near faction bases or contested waters trade safety for loot and should wait until your combat kit is solid.
Criterion 4: Room to Grow and Fast Travel In
Pick a footprint that can expand from a first shack into a real port with nearby chest crafting, farming, and a clear departure lane. A good base is also a Fast Travel Point anchor once copper progression opens travel up.
A Simple Scoring Method
Rate any candidate location from one to five on dock access, resources, safety, and room to grow. A spot that scores well on all four beats a famous landmark that only looks good. For the wider picture of what to prioritize as you settle in, see the Windrose tier list.
