V Rising Server Troubleshooting
Fix common V Rising server issues: connection problems, world loading, castle bugs, lag, crashes, and update errors.
V Rising Server Troubleshooting
Having issues with your V Rising server? This guide covers the most common problems and their solutions.
Connection Issues
"Connection Failed" / Unable to Connect
Check in order:
- Is the server running? Check dashboard status — should show "Running"
- Correct IP and port? Copy the IP and Game Port directly from your dashboard
- Server still starting? V Rising can take 1-3 minutes to fully load after restart
- Password correct? If the server has a password, ensure it's entered correctly
- Server full? Check if Max Users has been reached
Can't Find Server in Browser
If your server doesn't appear in the in-game server browser:
- Check "List on Master Server" — must be enabled in settings
- Wait 5-10 minutes — it can take time to register
- Use Direct Connect instead — more reliable than browser search
- Server name too long? Try a shorter name
"Version Mismatch" Error
Your game version doesn't match the server:
- Update your game — check for Steam updates
- Update the server — restart the server to apply pending updates
- V Rising updates simultaneously — both client and server need the same version
Disconnects During Play
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Server auto-save | Brief hiccup during save — normal, increase save interval if frequent |
| RAM exhaustion | Dashboard shows high RAM — upgrade plan |
| Network issues | Check ping, try different region |
| Server crash | Check console for error, restart |
Server Crashes
Server Crashes on Startup
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Out of memory | Not enough RAM | Upgrade plan |
| Save file corrupt | World data damaged | Restore from backup |
| Port already in use | Process not cleanly stopped | Restart from dashboard |
| Settings error | Invalid config value | Reset settings to default |
Server Crashes During Gameplay
- Check the console for error messages
- Note what was happening — was someone building, fighting, exploring?
- Common triggers:
- Large castle loading while many players are online
- Corrupted chunk/area of the map
- RAM exhaustion during peak activity
- Restart and monitor — if it repeats, check logs for patterns
Crashes After Update
Game updates occasionally introduce bugs:
- Check V Rising patch notes for known issues
- Wait for a hotfix — Stunlock Studios usually patches quickly
- Restore from pre-update backup if critical
- Report the bug in V Rising official channels
World & Save Issues
World Won't Load / Stuck Loading
- Wait longer — large worlds can take 3-5 minutes to load
- Check RAM — world loading is RAM-intensive
- Restore from backup if the save is corrupted
- Check disk space — server needs space for the world file
Castle Disappeared
Castles disappear when the Castle Heart runs out of Blood Essence:
- Check decay settings —
CastleDecayRateModifier - Was the Castle Heart fueled? — remind players to keep it supplied
- Raided? — on PvP servers, the Castle Heart may have been destroyed
- Server restart didn't save? — if the server crashed before auto-save
Lost Progress After Restart
If progress is lost after a server restart:
- Auto-save interval — default is 15 minutes; progress since last save is lost on crash
- Force save before restart — use
savecommand in console - Never kill the process — always use graceful shutdown via dashboard
Performance Issues
For detailed performance optimization, see our Performance Guide.
Quick Lag Fixes
- Restart the server — clears accumulated memory issues
- Check player count — are you over capacity?
- Clean up abandoned castles — use
dismantlealienhearton empty castles - Reduce castle limits — fewer castles per player
- Upgrade plan — if RAM is consistently above 85%
Lag During Specific Activities
| Activity | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Castle building | Complex structures loading | Reduce territory size limits |
| Boss fights | Many entities and effects | Normal — ensure adequate CPU |
| PvP raids | Destruction generates events | Expected during raids |
| Exploring new areas | Loading unvisited chunks | Normal — will improve after exploration |
| Blood Moon events | Extra enemies spawning | Upgrade plan if regular lag |
Admin Issues
Admin Commands Not Working
- Authenticate first — run
adminauthbefore other commands - Check SteamID — ensure you used the correct SteamID64 format
- Use the dashboard console — more reliable than in-game console
- Server restart required — some admin changes need a restart
Can't Modify Settings
- Stop the server before editing config files
- Edit the correct file —
ServerGameSettings.jsonfor gameplay,ServerHostSettings.jsonfor server config - Valid JSON — a single misplaced comma or bracket breaks the file
- Restart after changes — new settings apply on startup
Accidentally Broke Settings
- Dashboard reset — reset settings to defaults from the Settings tab
- Restore config files — restore from backup via Backups tab
- Manual fix — compare your config against default values
Update Issues
Server Not Updating
- Restart the server — updates apply on restart
- Force reinstall — some updates need a full server reinstall
- Check for pending updates in the dashboard
Mod/Update Incompatibility
After V Rising updates, mods may break:
- Disable mods temporarily
- Check mod compatibility — look for updated versions
- Wait for mod updates — mod authors need time after game patches
- Restore from backup if needed
Common Error Messages
| Error | Meaning | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Server is full" | Max users reached | Increase max users or upgrade plan |
| "Connection timed out" | Server unreachable | Check if running, verify IP/port |
| "Version mismatch" | Client/server version differ | Update both to same version |
| "Authentication failed" | Steam auth issue | Restart game, check Steam login |
| "Failed to load save" | Corrupted world | Restore from backup |
