The Furnace smelts raw ore like copper and iron into the ingots that every weapon, tool, and armor recipe depends on. It is one of the first production stations you build, and the Advanced Furnace later handles higher-tier metals. Smelting also processes other materials like glass and crafting components. No metal progression happens without one running. Place it near your ore storage to cut down on hauling.
