Every player needs the modpack installed on their client:

Intel

Important: The client modpack version must exactly match the server version. Mismatched versions cause connection failures.

Version Management

Updating a Modpack

  1. Back up your world first (Backups tab → Create Backup)
  2. Check the modpack's changelog for breaking changes
  3. Update via the Mods tab or manually upload new server files
  4. Tell all players to update their client-side modpack
  5. Restart the server

Downgrading a Modpack

If an update breaks your server:

  1. Restore from backup
  2. Manually install the previous version's server files
  3. Tell players to downgrade their client

Adding Extra Mods to a Modpack

You can add mods to an existing modpack, but be careful:

  1. Check compatibility with the modpack's Forge/Fabric version
  2. Ensure the mod doesn't conflict with existing mods
  3. Test on a backup world first
  4. Both server AND clients need the extra mod

Common Additions

ModWhat It AddsCompatible With Most Packs?
JourneyMapBetter world map✅ Yes
Xaero's MinimapHUD minimap✅ Yes
JEI/REIRecipe viewer✅ Yes (usually included)
Inventory TweaksSorting✅ Yes

Custom Modpack Creation

Building Your Own Server Modpack

  1. Choose your Forge or Fabric version
  2. Select compatible mods from CurseForge or Modrinth
  3. Test mod compatibility locally
  4. Upload server-side mod JARs to your server's mods/ folder
  5. Share your mod list with players

Tips for Custom Packs

  • Start small — Add 10-20 mods, test, then add more
  • Check dependencies — Many mods require library mods (Architectury, GeckoLib)
  • Watch for conflicts — Two mods modifying the same mechanic can crash
  • Version match everything — All mods must target the same MC version and loader

Troubleshooting Modpacks

Server Won't Start

  1. Check console for error messages
  2. Verify Forge/Fabric version matches the modpack requirements
  3. Check RAM — the server might need more memory
  4. Remove recent mods — if you added extra mods, remove them

"Missing Mods" Error When Joining

Players must have every mod the server has. Solutions:

  1. Ensure client modpack version matches the server
  2. Any extra mods added to the server must also be on the client
  3. Re-download the modpack if corrupt

Server Crashes During World Generation

Heavy modpacks struggle with new chunk generation:

  1. Increase RAM to the next plan tier
  2. Pre-generate chunks with Chunky (if compatible with the modpack)
  3. Reduce view distance to 6-8
  4. Set a world border to limit generation

Performance Issues

See our Performance Optimization Guide for general tips. Modpack-specific:

  • Remove client-side-only mods from the server
  • Disable unused mods if the pack has optional features
  • Update all mods — newer versions often have fixes
