Stygian Onslaught rewards the one thing the Spiral Abyss has quietly stopped testing: how much damage you can pour into a single health bar, fast, while it actively tries to stop you. There are no packs of fodder to sweep, no AoE clears to pad your numbers. It is you, one dangerous boss, and a clock. The comps that dominate here are not the ones that top the Abyss leaderboards. They are the ones built to concentrate everything onto one target and survive the return fire.
That is the whole thesis of this tier list. If your account is built around wide, reaction-driven AoE, Stygian will humble it. If you have invested in a focused single-target carry with a support shell that keeps them alive and buffed, this mode is where that investment finally pays out.
What the mode actually asks for
Before the rankings, four traits separate a Stygian team from an Abyss team. Every tier placement below is a judgement against these:
- Single-target ceiling. Your damage against one target is the entire score. Carries whose kits fan out across a screen lose most of their theoretical output here. Concentrated hitters win.
- Survivability under pressure. The boss does not politely wait. Higher difficulties hit hard and interrupt, so a shield or a strong heal is not optional the way it sometimes is in the Abyss. A dead carry deals zero damage.
- Burst on a timer. Scoring rewards killing fast. Teams that front-load a huge damage window beat teams that grind out steady damage over a long fight.
- Uptime against a mobile boss. Bosses reposition, phase, and go untargetable. A team that keeps its buffs and reactions live through a boss teleport outscores one whose whole setup lapses the moment the target moves.
If you want the season-agnostic power rankings underneath all of this, the full Genshin character tier list ranks the roster on raw strength, and the Spiral Abyss team tier list covers the AoE-and-two-sides mode this one is the mirror image of. This page is the single-target overlay on top of them.
S tier: the gold-bracket carries
These teams clear the top difficulty and top score bracket comfortably on reasonable investment. Every one is a focused single-target damage shell.
Hydro sustained-carry teams. The strongest single-target archetype in the game right now, and it is not close. A driving Hydro carry that deals continuous, front-loaded damage with a self-contained kit turns Stygian into a formality: the damage is single-target by nature, the uptime is constant, and pairing it with a damage-amplifying support and a defensive anchor covers survivability without diluting output. If you own this shell, slot it and stop reading; it hits gold on almost any boss in the rotation.
Vaporize hypercarry (Pyro on-field + Hydro applicator). The evergreen king of single-target burst. A Pyro main carry vaporizing off a steady Hydro application, buffed by a damage-share support and topped by an Anemo unit for resistance shred, concentrates an enormous multiplier onto one target. This is the comp that has cleared every boss-rush event Genshin has ever run, and Stygian is no exception. Its only weakness is bosses with awkward Hydro-application windows, which the roster below handles.
Melt burst carries (Cryo or Pyro into the opposite trigger). A high-multiplier carry that lands a small number of enormous Melt hits is tailor-made for a mode scored on speed. Where Melt struggles in wide Abyss chambers, against one target it is devastating, because you never waste the reaction on the wrong enemy. Bring a reliable off-field applicator and a shielder and this reaches gold.
A tier: strong, with a condition
These clear the top difficulty reliably but ask for slightly more investment, better play, or a favorable boss.
Lunar-Charged Electro core (Flins on-field, Ineffa feeding). Version 7.0's Electro reaction package is a genuine single-target threat, which is exactly the environment it wants. Flins as the on-field carry with Ineffa feeding the reaction concentrates Electro damage onto one boss beautifully, and the archetype front-loads well. It lands in A rather than S only because it wants a specific enabler to unlock its ceiling and is still settling into its optimal support shell; get the core online and it plays like an S-tier comp. This is also the current banner core, so if you are building it, the 7.0 wish schedule is where you complete it.
Stellar-Conduct teams (Sandrone-anchored). The Cryo-and-Electro reaction rework gave this pairing a real single-target damage identity for the first time. Anchored to Sandrone as the on-field carrier, a Stellar-Conduct team delivers concentrated, repeatable damage that suits Stygian's one-target format far better than the old Superconduct ever could. The full mechanics are broken down in the Stellar-Conduct reaction teams guide; against a boss, it is a solid A that pushes into S with a well-built support line.
Mono-element and driver hypercarries. A single carry buffed by two or three same-element supports, or a driver comp built around one on-field damage dealer, does excellent single-target work when the carry's kit is naturally focused. These teams live or die on how much their damage concentrates rather than spreads. Pick the carry whose big hits land on one target and this is A tier; pick one whose damage sprays and it drops fast.
Physical and Cryo shred carries. Against bosses with exploitable resistances, a Cryo carry that shreds and freezes (where the boss allows it) turns the fight into a controlled beatdown. The catch is that many endgame bosses resist crowd control, so treat this as A tier against the right target and situational elsewhere.
B tier: workable, not optimal
These finish the mode but rarely top the score bracket. They are what you run while you build something better.
Bloom and Hyperbloom teams. The great irony of Stygian: the AoE reaction cores that dominate the modern Abyss are mediocre here. Bloom seeds and Hyperbloom triggers are built to punish clustered enemies, and against one boss most of that theoretical damage evaporates. They clear, because the reaction damage is still real, but they will not hit the times a focused carry posts. If Hyperbloom is your best-built team, run it and clear the difficulty you can, then invest toward a single-target shell for the score.
Aggravate and spread teams. Same story as Bloom: the reaction is strong, but its identity is wide application across many targets. Concentrated onto one boss it underperforms its Abyss reputation. Serviceable, not a score-chaser.
Off-meta favorites with a good shield. An older or lower-rarity carry, fully built and behind a strong shield, will grind out a lower difficulty and its rewards. There is no shame in clearing the bracket you can clear cleanly rather than dying to the bracket you cannot. Stygian pays out per difficulty, so a safe silver beats a failed gold attempt.
Reading the boss, not just the tier list
The single most important habit in this mode is adapting to the specific boss in front of you, because a fixed team that ignores the matchup leaves score on the table.
- When the boss goes untargetable often, favor teams whose damage is front-loaded into a burst window you can dump the instant it becomes vulnerable, over teams that need a long uninterrupted ramp.
- When the boss element-locks or applies its own aura, your reaction-based carry may fight for the trigger it needs. Have a Freeze or shield answer ready, and check whether your applicator can keep up.
- When the boss hits like a truck, do not cut the sustain to squeeze in more damage. A run that survives to the timer outscores a greedy run that wipes at 40 percent. This is the mistake that separates a consistent gold from a coin-flip gold.
- When the boss has a stagger or break window, treat it like a free damage multiplier and time your carry's biggest hits to land inside it.
The fundamentals that make all of this work, energy funneling, the right buffer for your carry, and a survivability floor you do not drop below, are the same ones covered in the team-building guide. Stygian just turns the difficulty knob up on all of them at once.
Who tops the list
Stygian Onslaught is a single-target damage race with a boss that fights back, so it rewards concentration and survivability over the wide reaction cores that carry the Abyss. Hydro sustained carries, Vaporize hypercarries, and Melt burst teams sit at the top. The 7.0 reaction packages, Lunar-Charged and Stellar-Conduct, are strong A-tier single-target threats worth building toward. Bloom and Hyperbloom clear but do not chase the score. Above all, read the boss, keep your carry alive, and take the difficulty you can win cleanly rather than the one you can only sometimes reach.
