Ask a new Genshin player what is holding their account back and they will usually point at their characters. Nine times out of ten the real answer is their Adventure Rank. AR is the account-wide level that gates almost everything worth doing: the strength of the enemies you fight, the rewards they drop, which domains you can enter, and the single most important threshold in the game, the point where 5-star artifacts finally start falling. Understand the ladder and you stop wasting effort on content that cannot yet pay you back.
Adventure Rank and World Level are two different things
The confusion that trips up beginners: AR and World Level (WL) are linked but not the same.
- Adventure Rank rises from Adventure EXP and is what you see on your profile. It has a soft daily cap because a chunk of your EXP comes from a limited pool of activities.
- World Level is a separate tier that scales enemy level and reward quality. It goes up automatically at certain AR milestones, but from WL5 onward you must complete an Ascension quest to actually raise it.
Higher World Level is a double edge. Enemies hit harder and have more health, but they also drop higher-tier materials, more Mora, better artifacts, and richer chest rewards. The trap is out-leveling your characters: if a WL bump makes the overworld miserable, that usually means your team needs building, not that you leveled too fast. You can also manually lower your World Level in the Adventurer Handbook if a jump ever outpaces your roster.
Where your Adventure EXP actually comes from
You cannot brute-force AR with combat alone. The big, reliable sources are:
- Daily Commissions. Four per day plus the completion bonus. This is the steadiest AR income in the game and the one thing you should never skip.
- Archon and Story quests. Huge one-time EXP payouts. Doing the main story is doing your leveling.
- Opening the map. First-time chests, waypoints, statues, and domains all pay Adventure EXP. Early on, exploration is progression.
- Spending Original Resin on ley line outcrops (Blossom of Wealth for Mora, Blossom of Revelation for EXP) once you need targeted income.
Because commissions and story are the backbone, the fastest accounts are not the ones that grind, they are the ones that log in for dailies every day and push the story steadily.
The roadmap, milestone by milestone
Here is the ladder and what each rung actually unlocks.
| AR | World Level | What opens up |
|---|---|---|
| AR20 | WL1 | First character/weapon Ascension, WL1 enemies, Serenitea Pot at AR22 |
| AR25 | WL2 | Stronger overworld, better artifact drops |
| AR30 | WL3 | Higher-tier boss materials, first serious talent push |
| AR35 | WL4 | Weekly boss rewards scale up, gold-tier talent books more common |
| AR40 | WL5 | Ascension quest required, 5-star artifacts begin appearing (low rate) |
| AR45 | WL6 | Ascension quest, artifact domains reliably drop 5-star pieces |
| AR50 | WL7 | Ascension quest, top-tier enemy density and rewards |
| AR55 | WL8 | Ascension quest, hardest overworld, best drop tables |
| AR60 | WL8 | Account level cap; no further WL increase |
The two numbers to circle are AR40 and AR45.
Why AR45 is the account's real turning point
Everything before AR45 is preparation. AR45 is where the game changes character, because it is the first World Level (WL6) where artifact domains reliably drop 5-star artifacts. Artifacts are the deepest and longest grind in Genshin, and the difference between a 4-star and a 5-star piece is enormous, so farming a domain seriously before AR45 means throwing Resin at pieces you will replace anyway.
The practical rule: do not commit Resin to endgame artifact farming until AR45. Before then, your Resin is far better spent on talent books, weapon and character Ascension materials, and Mora, the things that make your team strong enough to survive WL6 when it arrives. Our Ascension and talent material priority guide covers exactly which of those to buy first.
How to spend Resin at each stage
Resin is the true bottleneck at every AR, and the right target shifts as you climb. A rough priority by phase:
- AR20 to AR35 (building phase): talent books, weapon Ascension ore, and character Ascension gems. You are trying to get a core team to a level where the overworld is comfortable. Bosses for Ascension mats come first; artifacts can wait.
- AR35 to AR45 (bridge phase): keep funding Ascension and talents, and start farming artifact main-stat pieces you know you will use long term, accepting that the sub-stats are placeholders. Weekly bosses (unlocked and scaling here) become a priority for talent-crown materials.
- AR45 and up (endgame phase): now open the artifact floodgates. This is where the Resin efficiency guide earns its keep, because a well-planned Resin week at WL6+ is worth a dozen sloppy ones.
Whatever the phase, the cardinal sin is letting Resin cap. It refills at 1 per 8 minutes to a 200 ceiling, so a full bar regenerates in roughly a day. Overflow is pure lost progress. Log in, spend it on the phase-appropriate target, log out.
Fit the rest of the account around the ladder
AR is the skeleton; a few systems hang off it and are worth timing well:
- The Serenitea Pot (housing) unlocks at AR22 and passively generates currency and, more importantly, Adventure EXP and friendship over time. Set it up early; it pays you while you play. See the Serenitea Pot housing guide.
- Spiral Abyss opens its full floors as you climb, and clearing it is a major Primogem source that feeds your pulls. The Floor 12 guide is the target once your team is built.
- Your pull economy should be planned in parallel, because a roster is only as good as the units you can field. The Primogem and wish economy guide pairs with this roadmap: AR feeds Primogems through Abyss and events, and Primogems feed the team that clears the next World Level.
What you actually get
Rush the story for the big EXP and the World Level jumps, never miss your four daily commissions, and treat AR45 as the line in the sand: everything before it is building a team, everything after it is grinding endgame artifacts. Spend Resin on what your current phase can actually use, never let it overflow, and lean on the team-building guide so your roster is ready for each World Level the moment your rank forces it on you. Do that and Adventure Rank stops being a wall and becomes exactly what it is meant to be: a schedule.
