Every account that feels stuck has the same problem underneath it: Resin spread across five half-built characters instead of poured into one finished one. Genshin gives you roughly 180 Resin a day and no way to buy your way to real power, so the entire progression game is a question of where that Resin goes. This guide is the answer, in priority order.
The headline rule: finish one character before you start the next. A single team of fully leveled, talented, artifact-equipped characters clears everything the game has. Five characters at level 60 with level-4 talents clear nothing. Depth beats breadth every single time.
What "finishing" a character actually requires
Three separate material tracks feed one character, and they draw on different activities:
- Level ascension raises the level cap in six steps (20, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, toward a max of 90). Each step needs an elemental gem, a local specialty (a region-specific plant you gather in the open world), a common enemy drop, and a boss material from a respawning open-world boss.
- Talents (your normal attack, Elemental Skill, and Elemental Burst) each level from 1 to 10. They eat talent books from a domain, the same common enemy drops, and, past level 6, a weekly boss material plus a Crown of Insight.
- Artifacts are farmed from domains and are, honestly, where most of your endgame Resin eventually lives.
Ascension unlocks the ceiling; talents and artifacts are where the actual damage comes from. That order matters for how you spend.
The priority order for a new or stuck account
Do these in sequence for your main damage dealer, then repeat for the next teammate:
- Ascend to level 80. The jump from 80 to 90 is expensive for a small stat gain, so 80 is the smart stopping point until an account is mature. Getting there unlocks your character's stat scaling and, on many characters, their fourth ascension passive.
- Talents to 6/6/6. Levels 1 through 6 only need domain books and common drops, no weekly boss material, so this is the cheapest big damage spike in the game. Prioritize the talent that carries the character (usually the Burst or Skill, not the normal attack, unless they are an on-field auto-attacker).
- Get artifacts to a working state. A 4-piece set with the right main stats matters more than perfect substats early. Do not chase god rolls before your team functions.
- Then, and only then, push talents to 8/8/8 and consider level 90.
The weekly rhythm: what is farmable on which day
Talent books and weapon ascension materials come from domains that rotate their drops by day of the week, and Sunday offers all of them. This is the single most important scheduling fact in the game, because if you skip your character's day, you wait a week.
| Days | What the talent domains drop |
|---|---|
| Monday / Thursday | One set of talent book families |
| Tuesday / Friday | A second set |
| Wednesday / Saturday | A third set |
| Sunday | All talent books, your catch-up day |
The practical move: know which day your main's talent books drop, and treat that day as sacred. Farm a full stack in one sitting rather than dribbling Resin. Use Condensed Resin (crafted, lets you double a domain run) to halve the number of days you spend on books.
Boss materials for ascension have no schedule, they just respawn, so slot those in on off days. Local specialties and common drops cost no Resin at all; gather them while exploring so you never bottleneck on them.
Where Resin should never go (early)
New players hemorrhage Resin on the wrong things. Avoid these until your first team is genuinely finished:
- Leyline Blossoms for Mora and XP books, endlessly. A little is fine, but Mora is rarely the true bottleneck; Resin is. Do not grind Blossoms while your talents sit at level 4.
- Artifact domains for a character you have not ascended. Great artifacts on a level-60 character are wasted stats.
- Level 90 on multiple characters. The 80-to-90 stretch is a luxury, not a requirement, and doing it five times over is how accounts stay shallow.
- Weekly bosses beyond the ones your team needs. Each weekly boss gives limited talent materials per week; spend them on the character you are actually building.
A concrete week for a stuck account
Say you pulled a strong damage dealer and a healer but everything is under-leveled. A focused week looks like:
- Monday to Saturday: Every day, check whether it is your DPS's talent-book day or weapon-material day. On the matching days, spend all Resin (plus Condensed Resin) in that domain. On non-matching days, farm the DPS's ascension boss and top up XP only if you have leftover Resin.
- In the open world, free of Resin: gather the DPS's local specialty and farm the common enemy camps that drop their ascension mats. Do this passively during story and exploration.
- Sunday: clean-up day. Grab whichever talent books you are still short on.
By the end of that week your damage dealer should be level 80 with 6/6/6 talents, which is a night-and-day difference in every combat mode. Then you point the same routine at your healer or sub-DPS.
The mindset that fixes accounts
Genshin rewards patience and punishes impulse. The temptation is always to spread Resin across every shiny new character, but the accounts that clear the Spiral Abyss and breeze through events are the ones that finished a team before starting the next. Pick your best character, pour a week of Resin into them start to finish, and feel how much stronger the whole account gets from a single completed build.
Where to go next
Materials get a character to the ceiling, but the team around them decides whether they perform, so pair this with our Genshin team building guide to make sure your Resin is going into characters that actually work together. When you are ready to squeeze more out of every run, the Resin farming efficiency guide and the artifact guide are the natural next steps. More Genshin breakdowns live in the guides hub.
