Genshin Impact Primogem Economy: How Many Wishes You Really Get, and How to Save for a Guarantee

A featured five-star costs up to 180 wishes if the coinflip hates you, and one Intertwined Fate costs 160 Primogems. This is how much a free-to-play account actually earns per version, where the Primogems come from, and how to bank a full pity so the character you want is never a maybe.

Most guides tell you how the wish system works. Almost none tell you the number that actually decides whether you get a character: how many wishes your account earns in six weeks. Wishing feels like luck, but at the account level it is a budget, and once you know your monthly income you stop pulling on hope and start pulling on a plan.

Here is the frame that changes everything. In the worst case, a featured five-star costs 180 wishes (a lost 50/50 at hard pity, then a guaranteed one at hard pity again). One Intertwined Fate costs 160 Primogems. So a guaranteed featured character, no luck at all, is roughly 28,800 Primogems. That sounds enormous until you see how the income adds up, and terrifying until you realize you almost never pay full price.

What a wish costs and where pity kicks in

The Character Event banner runs on a 90-wish hard pity for a five-star, with soft pity starting around wish 74, where the odds spike hard. On average people hit their five-star closer to 75 than 90. When one drops, it is a 50/50: either the featured character, or a random standard five-star. Lose the 50/50 and your next five-star is guaranteed to be the featured one. That guarantee carries between banners, which is the single most important rule in the whole system.

Four-stars have their own 10-wish pity with a soft pity a wish or two early, and every four-star roll is a 50/50 for the featured ones. The takeaway: your five-star cost swings between about 75 wishes (won the coinflip near soft pity) and 180 (lost it, both at hard pity). Plan for the bad case and the good case feels like a gift.

Your monthly Primogem income, honestly

A free-to-play account that actually plays earns a lot more than it feels like. Rough per-version numbers over a standard six-week patch:

SourcePrimogems per version (approx.)
Daily Commissions (60/day)2,400 to 2,600
Spiral Abyss (up to 600 per half, two resets)up to 1,200
Events (usually two to three per patch)2,000 to 4,000
Livestream codes (three per Special Program)~900
Maintenance and mail compensation300 to 600
New region or one-time exploration (when live)often several thousand

Add it up and a thorough free player clears roughly 60 to 90 wishes per version without spending a cent, more in patches that open a new area. That is not quite a guarantee every patch, but it is close, and it compounds the moment you stop wishing off-plan.

If you spend even a little, the math shifts fast. The Blessing of the Welkin Moon hands you 300 Genesis Crystals up front and 90 Primogems a day for 30 days, roughly 2,700 a month for the price of a coffee. The Battle Pass adds Intertwined Fates and Primogems on top. Neither is required, but the Welkin is the best value in the game if you are going to spend at all.

How to actually save a guarantee

Income is only half of it. The other half is discipline, and this is where most accounts leak.

  • Know your counter before you spend. Open the wish history, count wishes since your last five-star, and know whether you are on a guaranteed featured pull or a fresh 50/50. Never wish blind. Our wish pity breakdown shows exactly how to read it.
  • Bank toward 180, hope for 75. If you want a specific character with zero risk, hold until you have the Primogems and Fates for the full worst case. If you cannot bank all of it, at least reach the point where a lost 50/50 still leaves you able to hit the guarantee.
  • Do not touch the Standard Banner. Wanderlust Invocation has no rate-up and no guarantee carry. Every Acquaint Fate spent there is a wish that could have been aimed.
  • Skip is a strategy. The strongest free accounts are the ones that sit out banners they do not care about. A patch you skip is a patch of pure savings toward the character you actually want.

When to hard-pity and when to walk

Two situations justify pushing to 90 even when it hurts. First, when you are already deep into soft pity (past ~74) and the character is one you built your whole account around: you are closer than it feels, and the odds are now heavily in your favor. Second, when you are on a guaranteed featured pull for a meta-defining unit, because that guarantee does not come cheap and losing it to impatience on a banner you do not care about is the most expensive mistake in the game.

Everywhere else, patience wins. Weapon banners deserve special caution: the Epitome Invocation has its own 80-wish pity and a charting system, but weapons are usually a want, not a need, and pulling there is the fastest way to torch a character guarantee you were saving.

The one-paragraph version

Count your wishes before every session, treat 160 Primogems as the price of one pull and 180 pulls as the ceiling for a guaranteed character, earn your 60 to 90 wishes a patch by clearing dailies, Abyss, and events, and skip the banners you do not love so the ones you do are never in doubt. Do that and Primogems stop being a slot machine and become what they actually are: a paycheck you spend on purpose.
