Reverse: 1999 Investment Guide: Insight, Resonance, and Portray Without Wasting Materials

Insight raises the ceiling, Resonance shapes the stats, and Portray sharpens the skills. Here is the order to invest your Sharpodonty and rare materials in Reverse: 1999 so your main DPS carries and you never over-invest a bench unit.

Table of Contents

The fastest way to stall in Reverse: 1999 is to spread materials evenly across six characters you like. The game rewards the opposite instinct. One properly finished carry clears content that a roster of half-built favorites cannot touch, and the difference is almost entirely about knowing which of the three investment systems to feed first.

Those three systems are Insight, Resonance, and Portray. They sound interchangeable. They are not. Insight raises the level ceiling and unlocks passives. Resonance is where the real stats live. Portray sharpens what a character actually does in a fight. Get the order wrong and you burn rare drops on a unit that plays the same as it did an hour ago.

What each system actually does

SystemWhat it gives youWhere the materials come fromComes from dupes?
InsightRaises max level (30 to 40 to 50 to 60), unlocks passives, opens Resonance tiersStage drops plus SharpodontyNo
ResonanceDirect stat blocks (ATK, HP, Crit, Reality/Mental DMG) placed on a gridResonate materials (three tiers)No
PortrayStronger skill multipliers and extra effectsDuplicate copies of the characterYes

Insight is the gate. Every character starts capped at level 30, and each Insight breakpoint bumps that cap by ten while resetting your current level to one. Six-star and five-star units get three Insight levels; everything below gets two. Passing Insight 1 is also what opens the Resonance board, so you cannot skip it even if all you care about is stats.

Resonance is the part people underrate

Here is the number that matters more than any other in this guide: Resonate to 10 before you push a character to Insight 3.

Resonance is a board where you drop Tetris-style pieces, each one a bundle of stats. The board grows as you raise the Resonate level, and each Insight adds five more levels to the cap, up to 15 total. Early Resonate levels are pure, cheap power. The final stretch from 10 to 15 costs far more for a smaller return, which is why finishing Insight 3 first is a classic trap: you spend a mountain of ascension mats to unlock levels you are not ready to fill.

One placement rule saves you real currency. The bonus from an identical piece falls off hard from the fourth copy onward, so build each stat around three of a kind, not five. Stack three ATK pieces, three Crit pieces, and fill the rest with what the character wants rather than jamming a fourth of the same shape for a rounding-error gain.

Portray: nice to have, rarely the priority

Portray is the dupe system, five levels deep, and it is the one you should feel least guilty about ignoring. Every extra copy of a character turns into a Portray level that boosts skill multipliers and sometimes adds a new effect. On a signature carry those bonuses are genuinely strong. On everyone else they are a luxury.

The honest framing: Portray 1 is a meaningful bump on a main DPS and a shrug on a support. If the game hands you a free dupe of a low-rarity workhorse, take the Portray. Do not pull a banner a second time chasing P2 unless that specific unit is the core your whole account is built around. For most players, a character at Insight 3, Resonate 10, Portray 0 clears everything the daily and weekly content asks for.

The investment order that does not waste anything

  1. Insight 1 on your intended carry, immediately. This unlocks Resonance and the first passive.
  2. Resonate to as high as the tier allows, then push toward level 10 as Insight lets you.
  3. Insight 2, then keep Resonance climbing in step.
  4. Level the active skills on the carry to the cap your Insight allows. Skill levels are cheap power and easy to forget.
  5. Insight 3 and Resonate 10 to finish the DPS.
  6. Only now repeat the cycle for a second carry or a key support. Supports can often stop at Insight 2 and still do their job.
  7. Portray last, and only on the unit you actually pilot every day.

Spend your Sharpodonty freely on leveling, because gold is the resource you regenerate fastest. Guard the tiered Resonate materials and Insight drops, since those are what actually bottleneck a finished build.

Where the materials come from

Farming is stamina-gated, so plan your energy around what your carry needs next. Insight and skill materials come from the rotating material stages and the story; Resonate materials come from their own stage set. When you are short, the endgame modes and the shop refresh fill gaps without pulling on the banner. If a unit is stuck one breakpoint short, it is almost always a single material type holding it back, so read the ascension screen before you spend a single drop.

A quick sanity check before you invest

Ask three questions before dumping mats into any character:

  • Is this a carry, a support, or a favorite? Carries get the full cycle; supports stop early; favorites wait.
  • Am I about to buy Resonate levels past 10 while an earlier carry sits at Insight 2? Fix the earlier carry first.
  • Do I actually have the team to use this unit? A finished DPS with no team around it is a finished DPS that loses clashes anyway.

New to the game and not sure who deserves the first full build? Start with the beginner guide to pick a carry, cross-reference the current tier list, and grab active redeem codes for a head start on Sharpodonty before you commit a single Resonate piece.
