Genshin Impact Gauge Units and ICD: Why Your Reactions Keep Misfiring

Your Vaporize sometimes hits for double and sometimes does not, and the culprit is almost never your build. It is gauge units and internal cooldown. Here is the hidden application system that decides whether a reaction fires, how strong it is, and why some four-stars out-enable five-stars.

Here is a puzzle that trips up players hundreds of hours in. You fire the same Vaporize twice, same character, same weapon, same artifacts, and one hit lands for roughly double the other. Nothing in your build changed. What changed was invisible: the elemental gauge on the enemy and whether your attack was even allowed to touch it.

Genshin's reaction system runs on two hidden numbers the game never shows you. Learn them and a huge amount of "why did that not work" suddenly makes sense, including why a humble four-star can enable a team better than a splashy five-star.

Elements are a quantity, not a coat of paint

When you apply an element to an enemy, you are not flipping a switch. You are pouring in a specific amount of that element, measured in a unit the community calls Gauge Units (GU, or just "U"). Most single applications come in three sizes:

  • 1U: a light touch. Most per-hit applications from off-field supports, like each of Xingqiu's rain swords.
  • 2U: a solid application. Many skills and stronger single hits.
  • 4U: a heavy dose. Big burst applications and certain skills built to coat an enemy for a long time.

That aura then decays on its own over time, and here is the counterintuitive part: a larger gauge does not just last proportionally longer, it decays at a rate tuned so that bigger applications stick around meaningfully longer than small ones. A 4U Hydro aura is not simply "twice" a 2U aura in duration; it is the difference between an element that lingers for a rotation and one that evaporates before your carry can use it.

This is the whole reason "application" is a stat theorycrafters obsess over. A support who paints a fat, long-lasting aura lets your on-field carry trigger reaction after reaction. A support who dabs a thin coat forces you to time everything perfectly or watch the reaction fizzle. Reactions spend the gauge, and that is why doubles happen

Every reaction consumes gauge from the aura it triggers on. This is the answer to the opening puzzle.

Say an enemy is carrying a 2U Hydro aura and you hit it with a strong Pyro attack. Vaporize fires, and the reaction eats into that Hydro. Depending on the exact amounts, the aura might survive at a reduced value or be wiped entirely. If it survives, your next Pyro hit Vaporizes again. If it was consumed, your next Pyro hit lands with no reaction at all, dealing raw damage that looks like half of the previous number. Same button, wildly different result, because the fuel ran out.

Two practical rules fall out of this:

  1. The trigger element matters for how much gauge is spent. Amplifying reactions like Vaporize and Melt consume aura based on the incoming element and a reaction coefficient, which is why a hard-hitting Pyro application can burn through a thin Hydro aura in one go.
  2. Reverse reactions are greedier than forward ones. Applying Pyro onto Hydro (forward Vaporize, the 2x version) and applying Hydro onto Pyro (reverse, the 1.5x version) do not drain the aura identically. This feeds directly into why some carries want a heavy off-field applier and others are happy with a light one.

If you want the aura to survive for multiple triggers, you need it applied faster than your carry can eat it, or applied in a big enough chunk that one reaction cannot finish it. That is the entire design tension behind "enabler" units.

Internal cooldown: the reason spamming does not equal applying

Now the second hidden number, and the more famous one: Internal Cooldown, or ICD.

Most abilities in Genshin cannot apply their element on every single hit. If they could, a fast multi-hit attack would trigger an absurd number of reactions per second. To prevent that, the game gates application behind a timer and a counter working together. The default rule for most attacks is:

An attack applies its element on the first hit, then cannot apply again until 2.5 seconds have passed or 3 hits have landed, whichever comes first.

That "2.5 seconds or 3 hits" is the standard ICD template. It means that in a rapid string of normal attacks, only hits number 1, 4, 7, and so on actually put element on the enemy. The hits in between deal their physical or elemental damage but apply nothing, so they trigger no reaction.

This single rule explains a mountain of confusion:

  • Why your fast attacker "does not Vaporize every hit." It physically cannot. Two out of every three normal hits are locked out of application.
  • Why some supports feel so much better than their numbers suggest. Units whose application has no ICD, or a shorter one, coat the enemy far more consistently. Certain reaction hits (like Hydro from an Electro-Charged proc) and specific ability designs bypass the normal timer.
  • Why hitting faster can make reactions worse. Crank up your attack speed and you cram more non-applying hits into the same window, which does nothing for your reaction uptime and can even desync your rotation.

Not every ability uses the 2.5s / 3-hit default. Some skills apply on a different cadence, some big burst applications refresh a full aura on cast, and a handful of effects apply every hit. But when a unit "feels off" as an enabler, ICD is the first place to look.

Where this shows up in real teams

This is not academic. The gauge-and-ICD system quietly decides your roster.

  • Xingqiu and Yelan are S-tier Hydro enablers largely because their off-field swords apply Hydro on a rhythm that keeps a Pyro carry Vaporizing almost every hit.   • Xiangling's Pyronado is a beloved four-star engine because it plants a steady stream of Pyro applications off-field, feeding Vaporize and Overloaded teams a five-star could not out-enable.
  • Bennett matters here too: his Pyro application from the burst field can accidentally overwrite a Cryo or Hydro aura you wanted, so slot order and timing interact with the gauge system in ways new players never suspect.
  • Freeze teams live and die on gauge. A 4U Cryo application from Kamisato Ayaka or Ganyu plus consistent Hydro keeps enemies locked, because the heavy auras refuse to be consumed in a single reaction.

The takeaway for team building: when a guide says a unit is a "great enabler," it is usually saying that unit applies a healthy gauge on a friendly ICD. The mental model to walk away with

You do not need to memorize coefficients to play well. You need one clean picture:

Every element on an enemy is a shrinking puddle. Big applications make a deep puddle that lasts; small ones make a shallow puddle that dries fast. Every reaction you trigger scoops water out of the puddle, and reverse reactions scoop more. Meanwhile, most of your attacks are only allowed to add water on a timer, roughly every 2.5 seconds or every third hit, so mashing does not refill it.

Good reaction teams keep the puddle topped up faster than the carry drains it. Once you see your rotations that way, the misfires stop being mysterious and start being fixable: apply more, apply on time, or apply in bigger chunks.
