Elemental Mastery is the stat most new players ignore and most veterans quietly obsess over. It does nothing for a raw auto attack. It does everything for a reaction. Whether it belongs on your character comes down to a single question: does this unit do its damage through the elemental reaction, or through the hit itself? Answer that and the whole EM debate resolves in about ten seconds.
Here is the short version before the math. Stack EM on characters whose damage is a reaction (Hyperbloom, Overload, Burning, Swirl carries). Balance a little EM with Crit and ATK on characters who amplify their hits (Vaporize and Melt carries). Skip it almost entirely on characters who deal flat elemental or physical damage with no reaction in their kit.
Two families of reaction, two totally different rules
Every reaction in Genshin falls into one of two buckets, and EM treats them differently.
Transformative reactions are the ones that deal their own chunk of damage out of nowhere: Overloaded, Superconduct, Electro-Charged, Swirl, Shatter, Burning, Bloom, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon. Their damage does not care about your ATK, your Crit, or your talent multipliers at all. It scales off your character level and a reaction constant, then gets boosted by Elemental Mastery. For these, EM is the only offensive stat that matters. A Hyperbloom Raiden with 1000 EM and garbage ATK still hits like a truck, because the Hyperbloom seeds do not read her attack stat.
Amplifying reactions are Vaporize and Melt. They do not add a separate hit; they multiply the damage of the triggering attack, by 2.0x when the aura is favorable (Pyro onto Cryo for Melt, Hydro onto Pyro for Vaporize) or 1.5x when it is reversed. EM raises that multiplier, but it is stacked on top of a hit that still wants ATK, Crit Rate, and Crit DMG. So an amplifying carry splits its build: mostly Crit and ATK, with just enough EM to push the multiplier up.
If you remember nothing else: transformative wants pure EM, amplifying wants a splash of EM.
The diminishing-returns curve nobody explains
EM is not linear, and this trips people up. The bonus it grants follows a curve with a fixed constant baked in, so the first few hundred points are enormous and the last few hundred are almost decorative.
For amplifying reactions, the EM contribution to the multiplier is roughly:
2.78 x EM / (EM + 1400)
For transformative reactions, the EM boost term is roughly:
16 x EM / (EM + 2000)
Notice the + 1400 and + 2000. Those constants are why EM tapers. Going from 0 to 200 EM is a massive jump. Going from 800 to 1000 EM is a rounding error. This is the single most important fact about the stat, and it dictates every breakpoint below.
| Elemental Mastery | Amplifying bonus | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| 100 EM | ~+19% | Cheap, always worth it |
| 200 EM | ~+35% | The efficient sweet spot |
| 400 EM | ~+62% | Strong, still reasonable |
| 800 EM | ~+101% | Only for dedicated transformative carries |
| 1000+ EM | ~+116% | Diminishing hard, niche only |
The practical takeaway: 200 EM is the point where amplifying carries should usually stop and pour the rest into Crit and ATK. Transformative carries keep climbing because EM is their only damage stat, but even they feel the curve flatten past 900.
Who should actually stack it
Rather than a wall of names, sort your roster by how it fights.
- Pure transformative carries (Hyperbloom triggers like Raiden, Kuki Shinobu, or a well-built off-field Electro unit; Burning and Burgeon drivers; a Shatter Ganyu is the exception). Build these with EM Sands, EM Goblet, and EM Circlet, and chase EM substats. This is the one time you build a character with almost no ATK% and no Crit at all.
- Amplifying carries (Vaporize Hu Tao, Melt units, Vape Yoimiya). Build them mostly for Crit and ATK, but welcome 100 to 200 EM from substats or a weapon passive. Do not force an EM Sands on them.
- Swirl and support drivers (Kazuha, Sucrose, Venti, Anemo units running Viridescent Venerer). Kazuha and Sucrose want EM because their passives literally convert EM into damage buffs for the team. Kazuha's ascension turns every point of EM into more elemental damage for allies, and Sucrose shares a chunk of her EM with the active carry. Stack it.
- Nobody else. A Crit-scaling DPS with no reaction in its loop gets zero value from EM. Do not put an Instructor set on your Eula.
Where the EM comes from
You assemble EM from four places, and knowing the big sources keeps you from over-farming substats.
- Artifact main stats: the Sands, Goblet, and Circlet can all roll EM as a main stat (187 EM each at level 20). Three EM pieces is the backbone of a transformative build.
- Artifact set bonuses: Wanderer's Troupe gives +80 EM. Instructor gives the whole party +120 EM for a few seconds after a reaction, which is why it shows up on off-field enablers.
- Weapon passives: several catalysts, swords, and polearms grant flat EM or an EM secondary stat. Match the weapon to the build.
- Substats: each EM substat roll is worth much more than it looks early, and much less once you are already deep on the curve. Farm them for transformative carries, ignore chasing them past the sweet spot on everyone else.
The mistakes that cost the most
Two errors show up constantly. The first is putting EM on an amplifying carry as a main stat and wondering why the damage feels flat. Vaporize Hu Tao with an EM Sands is throwing away the ATK and Crit that most of her damage still scales on. The second is the reverse: running a Hyperbloom trigger with an ATK Sands and Crit pieces, then complaining the seeds tickle. The seeds never read those stats.
Get the family right first, then chase the number. EM is the stat that rewards understanding over grinding.
Keep tuning the rest of the build
EM is one lever. Once it is set, the other two damage stats decide the ceiling, so pair this with the Crit ratio guide for your amplifying carries and the elemental reactions guide to make sure you are triggering the right reaction in the first place. From there, the artifact guide covers set selection, energy recharge keeps your rotation online, and the best characters ranking shows who is worth this investment. New to a team?
