Ask five Genshin players how much Energy Recharge a character needs and you will get five different answers, and all of them can be right. That is the part nobody explains well. Energy Recharge is not a stat you copy off a build guide and forget; it is a target that shifts with the character's burst cost, how many particles they and their teammates generate, and how the rotation is played. Get it right and your burst is up every single rotation without a wasted stat point. Get it wrong and either your damage vanishes for a turn or you overinvest in Recharge you never needed and starve your crit stats.
What Energy Recharge actually does
Every Elemental Burst has an Energy cost, the number printed on the burst icon. It ranges from around 40 on the cheap end to 90 on the hungriest units. To fire the burst you have to fill that many points of Energy.
Base Energy Recharge is 100 percent. Recharge is a multiplier on the Energy you collect, so at 200 percent ER, a particle worth 3 Energy is credited as 6. Doubling your Recharge does not halve the burst cost; it doubles the value of everything you pick up, which effectively means you reach the cost in half the raw particles. That distinction matters when you are deciding whether one more roll of ER is worth giving up a crit line.
Energy comes overwhelmingly from Elemental Particles, the little orbs that pop out when a character uses an Elemental Skill. A handful of other sources exist (defeated enemies, some overworld objects, certain weapons and passives), but skill particles are the engine.
The particle rules that decide your number
This is where the "it depends" lives. Three rules govern how much a particle is worth:
- On-field beats off-field. The character currently on screen collects the full value of a particle. Characters sitting on the bench receive a reduced share.
- Same element beats off element. A particle matching the collector's element is worth the most. An on-field character grabbing a particle of their own element gets the headline value of 3 Energy; an off-element particle is worth noticeably less.
- Fewer of an element means more each. This is funneling. Energy from off-field particles is split across the party, and the smaller the number of characters sharing an element, the larger each one's slice. A lone Electro unit on the team drinks up Electro particles far faster than one of three Electro units would.
Put those together and you get the core insight: the same character needs wildly different ER depending on the team around them. A support who is the only user of their element, standing behind a teammate who spams particles, barely needs any bonus Recharge. That same support dropped into a team with no particle support and two other units of the same element can struggle to burst even at 200 percent.
ER targets by role
Treat these as starting ranges, not laws. Verify with the in-fight test at the bottom, because your exact rotation is the tiebreaker.

A few concrete patterns you will run into constantly:
- Hydro and Cryo appliers who live off field (the classic "apply and leave" supports) frequently want 180 to 220 percent because they are grabbing off-element particles at reduced value.
- Pyro sub-DPS who rely on a signature field effect often want 160 to 200 percent, sliding lower the moment you add a same-element particle battery.
- Main DPS with a dedicated battery can drop toward 100 to 120 percent, because the battery is doing the particle work and funneling it over.
The levers that lower your ER need
If your numbers look scary, you usually do not need more Recharge substats. You need a better particle plan. Pull one of these levers first:
- Add a battery. A second unit of the same element whose whole job is generating particles is the single biggest ER reducer in the game. It is why so many teams are built around a specific pairing rather than two random units of an element.
- Use a Favonius weapon. Favonius Sword, Bow, Lance, Greatsword, and Codex generate extra particles on crit, and they generate them of the wielder's element. Slap one on a support and its whole team drinks better.
- Equip Emblem of Severed Fate. This artifact set boosts Energy Recharge and then converts a chunk of that Recharge into Burst damage, so ER stops being a dead stat. For any burst-focused support it is often the best-in-slot set precisely because it makes over-capping ER productive.
- Fix your rotation, not your gear. Firing skills off cooldown and collecting particles on the right character (the burst user, on field, when possible) can be worth 30 to 40 percent effective ER without changing a single artifact.

The 30-second in-fight test
Forget spreadsheets. This is how veterans actually check ER:
- Run your standard opener from a full-energy start once, so the rotation settles.
- On the next loop, watch the burst you are worried about. When it comes back off cooldown, is its energy already full or one particle short?
- If it is full with room to spare every loop, you have too much ER. Reroll a Recharge substat into crit.
- If it is short even once, add a little ER (one substat, or a sands swap) or fix your particle collection, then retest.
"Bursts every rotation with almost nothing wasted" is the target. Comfortably over that line means you are leaving crit damage on the table; under it means a dead turn.

Energy Recharge is one leg of a three-leg stool: energy to fire the burst, resin spent efficiently to build the artifacts that carry it, and a wish economy healthy enough to land the units that make batteries possible in the first place. Recharge is the cheapest of the three to fix, because it usually costs you nothing but a rethink of who collects the particles.
