Start With a Plan, Not a Sprint
Abiotic Factor drops you into a sealed research facility as a scientist who suddenly has to survive. The opening hours go far better when you treat them as a checklist: pick a job, cover your survival needs, learn salvage crafting, and set up a small safe base before exploring deeper. This guide is the fast, low-death route through that first stretch.
Want the deeper systems after this? Pair it with our base building guide and the tier list.
Pick a Job That Matches Your Group
Your starting job sets early perks, not a permanent class. Solo players want a well-rounded pick that helps with crafting or combat. In co-op, spread jobs across the team so you cover research, defense, and support instead of stacking the same bonus. None of it locks you in, because progression comes mostly from skills leveling through use.
Cover Survival Needs Early
You cannot explore on an empty meter. Keep an eye on hunger, thirst, fatigue, and stress, and stock a buffer of cooked food and water before any long trip. Watch the environment too: temperature and radiation will wear you down in specific zones, so carry the right gear and a first aid kit before pushing into them.
Learn Salvage Crafting
Everything in the facility is raw material. Salvage crafting turns office furniture, scrap, and junk into tools, weapons, and base parts. Early on, prioritize a reliable melee weapon like the crowbar or a makeshift spear, plus enough crafting stations to keep upgrading without long backtracks.
Build a Small Safe Base First
You do not need a fortress on day one. You need a defensible room with a bed, storage, a cooking setup, and a crafting bench near where you explore. A compact base you actually return to beats an ambitious one you never finish. Once it is stable, expand toward power and defenses using the full base building guide.
Explore in Short Loops
When your needs and gear are handled, scout in short loops back to base rather than one long push. Mark hazards, note locked doors, and retreat before your meters get dangerous. In co-op, travel together for the first zones so one downed player does not end the run.
First-Hours Checklist
- Pick a job that fits solo or your group
- Keep survival needs topped up and carry spare food
- Craft a starter melee weapon through salvage crafting
- Build a small safe room with a bed, storage, and a bench
- Explore in short loops and respect temperature and radiation
