The Short Answer

Chemistry is the crafting system added in the 1.3.0 Cosmic Companions update, and it turns the strange, anomalous materials you bring back from expeditions into powerful consumables. It works in two stages across two benches: the Distillation Bench breaks raw anomalous materials down into Distillations, and the Chemistry Bench mixes those distillations, in different ratios, into three kinds of output: throwable flasks, drinkable tinctures, and weapon coatings. It unlocks once you reach Cascade Laboratories, and it rewards experimentation, so expect to burn some materials figuring out what makes what.

This slots in alongside the core salvage and crafting loop and the cooking system: where cooking feeds your body, chemistry feeds your fights.

Stage 1: The Distillation Bench

The Distillation Bench is where chemistry starts. Feed it the anomalous materials you gather on expeditions and it processes them into one of roughly 15 Distillations, the base reagents for everything downstream. It is not perfectly reliable: the patch notes are honest that a run can occasionally hand you a "vial of useless slop" instead, so bring spare materials and do not distill your last of anything.

Think of distillations as your chemistry ingredients. You are not making the final product here, you are refining raw Anteverse and facility matter into standardized reagents you can then combine.

Stage 2: The Chemistry Bench

The Chemistry Bench is where distillations become useful. It has 3 flask slots, and each flask holds up to 8 doses of distillations at a time. You fill the flasks with distillations in various ratios, and the ratio is the recipe: different combinations and proportions produce different concoctions. This is the experimentation layer. There is real depth here, and part of the fun is discovering which mixes do what.

The bench produces three families of output.

Throwable Flasks

There are 12 throwable flasks you can concoct and then fling at enemies (or, the patch notes cheerfully note, at your friends in co-op, depending on how much of a team player you are feeling). These are your chemical grenades: area effects and utility you throw rather than drink.

Tinctures

There are 10 tinctures, drinkable concoctions that give a scientist potent but very temporary effects. Use these like combat stims: powerful for a short window, so time them for a fight or a hazardous stretch rather than sipping them idly.

Weapon Coatings

There are 10 weapon coatings you apply to your gear for added effects. Coatings pair naturally with the melee-heavy early game and with the buffs from a good Heightened Senses stew, stacking crafting systems into a real damage spike.

How to Get Started

  1. Push to Cascade Laboratories and unlock the two chemistry benches; chemistry is not an opening-hours system, it comes online once you are established.
  2. On expeditions, collect anomalous materials instead of leaving them behind, since they are your distillation feedstock.
  3. Distill in batches so a "useless slop" result does not strand you with nothing.
  4. Experiment at the Chemistry Bench with small ratios first, note what works, and save the mixes that matter for your playstyle.

Chemistry is a mid-game power system, not a survival basic, so treat it as the layer that turns a stable base into an armory. For where it fits in the wider game, see our beginner guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chemistry in Abiotic Factor? Chemistry is the crafting system added in the 1.3.0 Cosmic Companions update. You distill anomalous materials into reagents at the Distillation Bench, then mix them at the Chemistry Bench into throwable flasks, drinkable tinctures, and weapon coatings.

How do you unlock chemistry in Abiotic Factor? It unlocks once you reach Cascade Laboratories and build the Distillation Bench and Chemistry Bench. It is a mid-game system rather than something available in your first hours.

What is the difference between the Distillation Bench and the Chemistry Bench? The Distillation Bench refines raw anomalous materials into Distillations. The Chemistry Bench mixes those distillations, in different ratios across its three flasks, into the finished flasks, tinctures, and coatings.
