When you create a character you choose a job background from the GATE facility's old staff roster, like Lab Assistant, Security, Engineer, or Doctor. Your job sets your starting traits, skills, and a little flavour, but Abiotic Factor has no hard classes: anyone can learn anything as they level skills through use. Lab Assistant is a balanced, beginner-friendly pick, while combat or crafting jobs lean you toward a role early.
