Get Ready for September 9
The Deep North 1.0 update lands September 9, 2026, ending early access and adding the final biome, the final boss, PS5, Switch 2, and full crossplay. Major updates mean returning players, new content, and (every single time) a wave of broken mods and corrupted worlds for people who didn't prepare.
This tutorial walks through everything to do before the patch drops so your dedicated server updates cleanly and your crew jumps straight into the Deep North.
Step 1: Back Up Your World (Non-Negotiable)
Before any major Valheim update, back up your save. New versions can change world data, and a bad update with no backup means a lost world.
On a dedicated server, your world files live in the save directory:
Back up both files for every world:
Also back up character files if your host stores them server-side, and download a copy off the server entirely. One backup on the same machine is one disk failure away from useless.
Tip: If you host with a managed provider, take a manual snapshot/backup from the control panel right before launch day on top of any automatic backups.
Step 2: Audit Your Mods
This is what breaks the most servers. A 1.0 release this size will break most mods on day one.
- List every mod running on the server (BepInEx plugins, server-side mods, client mods your players use).
- Note which are essential vs. nice-to-have.
- Plan to launch vanilla first. On patch day, run the server with no mods until your essential mods publish 1.0-compatible updates.
- Watch the mod pages (Thunderstore / Nexus) for "updated for 1.0" notes before re-enabling anything.
Re-enabling an outdated mod against a fresh major version is the #1 cause of crash-on-load after an update.
Step 3: Pin or Free Your Server Version
Decide how you want the update to roll out:
- Update immediately on launch day: best if your group is ready to play the Deep North right away and you've handled mods.
- Delay the update: if you rely on mods that won't be ready, keep the server on the current version until your toolchain catches up. Many hosts let you lock the Steam build or disable auto-update.
Make this decision before September 9 so an auto-update doesn't surprise you mid-session.
Step 4: Prep Your World and Gear
The Deep North is the post-Ashlands endgame biome. To actually play the new content, your crew needs to be deep into progression.
Pre-launch checklist:
- Defeat the bosses up through the Ashlands tier
- Stockpile the best armor and weapons you can craft
- Practice the new Call to Arms combat mechanics: Perfect Dodge and Perfect Block timing
- Brew the strongest frost-resistance mead you have (the Deep North is cold)
- Build a forward portal hub near the frozen biome's edge
- Farm spare materials for repairs and new-recipe experimentation
The Deep North introduces gear crafted from northern-only materials (including a hook-launching arbalest), so leave inventory and storage space for the new loot.
Step 5: Sort Out Crossplay
With 1.0, full crossplay goes live across PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. If your group is bringing in console friends:
- Share your server's join code / crossplay code (not just the IP) so console players can connect.
- Confirm your host exposes the crossplay join flow. Dedicated servers support it, but make sure your provider's networking is configured for it.
- Test a connection with one console player before launch night if you can.
Step 6: Update, Then Verify
When you're ready to update:
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Confirm your backup exists off-server (Step 1).
- Update the server build to 1.0.
- Start vanilla (no mods) and confirm the world loads.
- Join in and verify spawn, inventory, and structures are intact.
- Re-enable mods one at a time, only after each is confirmed 1.0-ready.
If anything loads wrong, stop immediately and restore your backup, and don't keep playing on a half-broken world.
Launch Day, Sorted
Do these six steps and September 9 is a celebration, not a fire drill. Your world is safe, your mods won't crash the server, your crew is geared, and your console friends can join.
Don't have a dedicated server yet? An always-online world means your group can prep together now and dive into the Deep North the moment it drops. Deploy a Valheim server and get ahead of launch. Need a hand? We're in Discord.
