Self-Host or Rent? The Real Comparison
Every Valheim group eventually asks the same question: should we run our own dedicated server, or just rent one?
The answer depends on your technical comfort, how much you value your time, and whether you want to deal with maintenance. Here is an honest comparison.
The Quick Answer
Rent a server if: You want it working in minutes with zero maintenance, automatic backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 uptime without running a PC all day.
Self-host if: You have spare hardware, enjoy server administration, and want complete control over the operating system and network.
For most groups, renting is cheaper and less hassle. Here is why.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Factor | Self-Hosted | Hosted (HostedGG) |
| Setup time | 30-60 minutes (ports, firewall, scripts) | Under 60 seconds |
| Monthly cost | Electricity + wear on hardware | From about 3 euros for 3 days |
| Always online | Only while your PC runs | Yes, 24/7 |
| DDoS protection | None (your home IP exposed) | Enterprise-grade, included |
| Backups | Manual (or script it yourself) | Automatic rolling backups |
| Crossplay | Manual config + PlayFab setup | One toggle |
| Mod support | Full (you control the OS) | Full (FTP + file manager) |
| Performance | Depends on your hardware | Enterprise NVMe, dedicated resources |
| Port forwarding | Required (UDP 2456-2458) | Not needed |
| Maintenance | Updates, restarts, monitoring — all you | Managed automatically |
The Real Cost of Self-Hosting
People assume self-hosting is "free" because they already own the hardware. But running a PC 24/7 has real costs:
Electricity: A typical gaming PC draws 150-300W under load. Running 24/7:
- 200W average x 24 hours x 30 days = 144 kWh/month
- At about 0.30 euros per kWh (EU average): about 43 euros per month in electricity alone
That is more than 4x the cost of a hosted Valheim server.
Hardware wear: Running a PC 24/7 accelerates wear on fans, SSDs, and power supplies. A PSU or drive failure means downtime and replacement costs.
Your time: Setting up port forwarding, configuring firewalls, writing update scripts, monitoring crashes, managing backups — this all takes time. If your time has any value, the "free" server is not free.
Setup: 60 Seconds vs 60 Minutes
Hosted Setup (HostedGG)
- Go to the Valheim server page
- Pick Vanilla or Valheim Plus
- Set server name and password
- Enable crossplay if needed
- Done — server is online
Total time: under 60 seconds.
Self-Hosted Setup
- Install Steam on the host machine
- Install Valheim Dedicated Server from Steam library
- Edit the startup batch script with your server name, world name, and password
- Open your router admin panel
- Forward UDP ports 2456, 2457, and 2458 to your PC's local IP
- Configure Windows Firewall to allow the Valheim server executable
- Run the startup script and wait for the world to generate
- Find your public IP and share it with friends
- If crossplay is needed: configure PlayFab integration separately
- Set up a scheduled task or script for automatic restarts
Total time: 30-60 minutes if everything goes smoothly. Longer if your router's port forwarding UI is confusing (many are).
Performance
Self-hosted: Your server competes with everything else on your PC for CPU, RAM, and disk I/O. If you are also playing Valheim on the same machine, both the server and client fight for resources — leading to stuttering, especially in large bases.
Hosted: Runs on dedicated enterprise hardware with NVMe SSDs. No resource contention, consistent performance, and better I/O for chunk loading and world saves.
Valheim's world generation and terrain modification are disk-intensive. NVMe storage makes a noticeable difference compared to older SATA SSDs or hard drives.
Security
Self-hosted risk: Running a public game server from home exposes your IP address. Anyone who connects to your server can see your IP. This makes you vulnerable to:
- DDoS attacks that take down your entire internet connection
- Port scanning and potential exploitation of other services on your network
- Targeted attacks from disgruntled players
Hosted protection: Your home IP is never exposed. The server runs behind enterprise DDoS mitigation, and attacks against the server do not affect your home network.
This alone is enough reason for many people to use a hosted server.
Backups and World Safety
Valheim worlds represent dozens or hundreds of hours of building. Losing a world to corruption or hardware failure is devastating.
Self-hosted: You need to set up your own backup system. Most people forget until it is too late. A script running robocopy or rsync on a schedule works, but you have to set it up and verify it.
Hosted: Automatic rolling backups are enabled by default. If your world corrupts or you want to roll back a mistake, restore from the control panel with one click.
When Self-Hosting Makes Sense
Self-hosting is the right choice if:
- You have a dedicated machine (not your gaming PC) that is already running 24/7
- You enjoy Linux server administration and want full OS-level control
- You want to run custom scripts, integrations, or monitoring that require OS access
- You are using the server for development or testing purposes
If any of these apply, self-hosting gives you flexibility that no hosting provider can match. But for the vast majority of Valheim players who just want to play with friends, it is overkill.
When Hosted Is the Clear Winner
- You play Valheim on the same PC — do not run client and server on the same machine
- Your group plays at different times — always-online means anyone can log in anytime
- You do not want to deal with port forwarding — many ISPs and routers make this painful
- You value your world — automatic backups protect hundreds of hours of building
- Security matters — your home IP stays private
Cost Breakdown
| Option | 3-Day Cost | Monthly Cost | Annual Cost |
| HostedGG Vanilla | About 3 euros | 9.99 euros | About 96 euros (yearly discount) |
| HostedGG Plus | About 3.90 euros | 12.99 euros | About 125 euros (yearly discount) |
| Self-Hosted (electricity only) | About 4.30 euros | About 43 euros | About 520 euros |
| Self-Hosted (realistic) | About 5+ euros | About 50+ euros | About 600+ euros |
The "realistic" self-hosted cost includes electricity, hardware depreciation, and the occasional replacement part.
The Verdict
For most Valheim groups, renting a hosted server is cheaper, faster, safer, and more reliable than self-hosting. You get 24/7 uptime, DDoS protection, automatic backups, and crossplay support — all configured in under a minute.
Self-hosting only makes financial sense if you already have a dedicated machine running 24/7 for other purposes and you enjoy the system administration side of things.
