Valheim Combat Just Got a Major Rework

Before the Deep North 1.0 launch on September 9, Iron Gate shipped one of the biggest combat reworks in the game's history. Patch 0.221.13 (May 6, 2026), the Call to Arms update, overhauls how dodging, blocking, and stamina management feel from the first greyling to the final boss.

If you've been away, your muscle memory is out of date. Here's what changed.

Adrenaline: A New Combat Resource

Call to Arms introduces Adrenaline, a new layer to moment-to-moment fighting. Instead of every encounter being a pure stamina-attrition war, Adrenaline rewards aggressive, well-timed play, building up as you fight and feeding into the new defensive mechanics below. It pushes combat away from "swing, back off, wait for stamina" and toward sustained, reactive engagements.

The Perfect Dodge Roll

The headline mechanic. The Perfect Dodge Roll rewards precise timing: roll at the right moment as an attack lands and you get a perfect evade. This turns dodging from a panic button into a skill expression, punishing enemy windups and creating openings instead of just creating distance.

Mastering dodge timing is now the difference between a clean fight and a frantic one, especially against the heavy-hitting enemies waiting in the Deep North.

Stamina-Free Perfect Blocks

Blocking got the same treatment. A well-timed Perfect Block now costs no stamina. Time your block to the incoming hit and you negate it without draining the bar that you also need for attacking and dodging.

This is a huge shift. Previously, blocking heavy attacks could gut your stamina and leave you helpless. Now, defensive players who read enemy patterns can hold their ground indefinitely, and turtle-and-counter is a viable build again.

New Bears, New Viles

Call to Arms also added new wildlife and threats:

  • Bears: a new dangerous creature roaming the world
  • Viles: new hostile enemies to contend with

These aren't just flavor. The new enemies are tuned around the reworked combat, so they're designed to test your dodge and block timing rather than your patience.

The Bear Armor Set

Hunt the new bears and you can craft the Bear armor set, a fresh mid-game armor option that slots into the progression and gives players a new reason to venture out and hunt before tackling the colder biomes.

Why This Matters Before 1.0

The Call to Arms rework isn't a standalone patch. It's the foundation for the Deep North. The final biome's enemies (Gammeltrolls, Elakingar, dungeon imps, and the final boss) are built on top of this new combat model. Walking into the Deep North without practicing Perfect Dodges and Perfect Blocks is asking to get frozen and flattened.

The smart move: get reps in now. Re-learn the timings on familiar enemies so you're sharp when 1.0 drops.

Practice With Your Crew

The fastest way to drill the new combat is with friends on an always-online world: take turns tanking, test block timings, and farm the new bears for armor together.
