Ask a veteran Honkai: Star Rail player what stat they check first on a new relic and most of them will say the same thing: Speed. Not crit, not attack. Speed. It is the quiet backbone of every clear, the number that decides who acts before the enemy, how many turns you squeeze out of a Memory of Chaos cycle, and whether your buffer's shiny new percentage is even active when your damage dealer swings.

The frustrating part is that Speed is not intuitive. More is not always better, the useful numbers are oddly specific, and the game never explains any of it. So here is the whole system, from the math underneath to the exact thresholds worth chasing.

The one formula everything runs on

Turn order in Honkai: Star Rail is not a queue. It is a race along a track that is 10,000 units long, and every character's Speed decides how fast they travel it.

The number that matters is Action Value, and it comes from a single equation:

Action Value = 10,000 / SPD

A character with 100 SPD needs 100 Action Value to take a turn. A character with 160 SPD needs only 62.5. Lower Action Value means you reach your turn sooner and reach it more often. That is the entire game. Every breakpoint you will ever read about is just a Speed number that drops your Action Value below some meaningful line.

Two more facts complete the picture:

  • A combat "cycle" is 150 Action Value on the first cycle, then 100 per cycle after that. Endgame modes like Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow give you a cycle budget. Blow through it and you lose stars. Speed is how you buy more turns inside that budget.
  • Higher SPD does not just help you act first, it compounds. Over a long fight, a faster character banks extra turns, and extra turns are extra Skill Points, extra damage, and extra buff uptime.

Why supports live and die by specific numbers

Here is the thing that trips up newer players. A damage dealer usually just wants "enough" Speed. A support wants an exact Speed, because a support's whole job is to act at the right moment relative to the carry.

Think about what a buffer does. It walks up, hands your carry a damage boost, and steps back. If that buff lands after your carry has already taken its turn, you wasted it. So supports are tuned to move first, refresh their buff, and ideally cycle back around before the buff falls off. That is a timing problem, and timing problems have breakpoints.

The community has settled on a handful of Speed targets that keep showing up because they line up cleanly with the cycle math:

The carry question: how fast is fast enough

Damage dealers are simpler but not thoughtless. Most hypercarries are happy in the rough 110 to 134 zone, because past that you start trading crit, attack, or energy for turns you do not always need. A big-hit carry that fires one massive Ultimate per rotation does not benefit from lapping the field the way a support does.

There are exceptions, and they are worth naming:

  • Follow-up and summon carries often want less Speed than you would think, because their damage comes from reactions and procs rather than their own turn count.
  • Break and super-break carries care about acting before the enemy to keep toughness pressure on, so they lean a little higher.

The honest rule: build your carry's damage first, then check where its Speed landed, then decide if a Speed boot is worth the crit you would lose.

Where Speed actually comes from

You cannot tune what you cannot source. Your Speed pool is assembled from a few places, and knowing the pieces keeps you from over-investing in one:

  • Boots main stat. A Speed boot gives a flat chunk (roughly 25 at level 15). This is the single biggest lever and the reason "Speed boots or ATK boots" is the eternal argument.
  • Substats. Speed rolls are small but they stack, and they are how you sneak from 128 up to that 134 line without giving up your boot slot.
  • Light Cones and set effects. Some cones and the two-piece Speed relic set hand you a flat or percentage boost. Percentage Speed multiplies your base, so it is worth more on naturally fast units.
  • In-combat buffs. Abilities from teammates. These are real, but do not tune around a buff that is not always up, or you will fall below your breakpoint the moment it lapses.

The trap to avoid: chasing a breakpoint with a Speed boot and then realizing an in-combat buff already pushed you past it, so the boot was wasted crit. Always count your permanent Speed first, then let buffs be gravy.

A simple way to tune a team

You do not need a spreadsheet for most content. You need an order of operations.

  1. Decide who has to move first. Usually a support or a battery. Give that unit the Speed boot and aim for 134 or 160 depending on how aggressive the team is.
  2. Set your sustain second. A healer or shielder that acts a hair after the buffer, so it can react to damage. 134 is a safe home.
  3. Let the carry fall where it lands. Build its damage, check the resulting Speed, and only add more if it dips into awkward territory (a carry that acts dead last every cycle can feel bad, especially against enemies that wipe your buffs).
  4. Stress-test in the mode you care about. Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow each reward different tempos. Pure Fiction loves fast, turn-hungry teams; a single-target Boss fight in MoC rewards a clean, deliberate rotation. Tune for the fight in front of you.

Common mistakes that quietly cost you clears

  • Over-speeding a carry. Every point of Speed above what your rotation needs is crit or attack you gave away. If your carry already acts twice per cycle comfortably, stop.
  • Ignoring the enemy's Speed. Some bosses and elites are fast. Acting before them is not just about buffs, it is about not eating a mechanic first. Check the fight, not just your team.
  • Tuning around a temporary buff. Build your breakpoints on permanent Speed. Treat teammate buffs as a bonus, not a foundation.
