The best-kept secret in Honkai: Star Rail is that the game was tuned to be beaten by 4-stars. Not just survived, beaten. A huge slice of the endgame, including plenty of full-star Memory of Chaos clears, gets done every patch by accounts running characters that anyone can pull for free or nearly so. The 5-stars raise your ceiling. They do not set your floor, and the floor is higher than the shop wants you to believe.
So before you agonize over a limited banner, learn the toolkit you already have. Here are the 4-stars worth building and the teams they make.
The all-stars: build these first
Most of a team's strength lives in its supports and its sustain, and Honkai: Star Rail's 4-star options there are excellent. Prioritize traces and Eidolons on this shortlist and you will have a working answer for almost any DPS you eventually pull.
- Tingyun (Lightning, Harmony). The single-target buff engine. She hands your carry a big attack boost plus bonus energy and damage, and she is arguably the best 4-star support in the game. If you run one buffer, run her.
- Pela (Ice, Nihility). Defense shred that raises everyone's damage, plus a nuke and energy. Universal, free-feeling value, and she never falls off.
- Asta (Fire, Harmony). An attack and speed booster you get very early. Speed is one of the most valuable stats in the game, and Asta hands it out to the whole team.
- Gallagher (Fire, Abundance). A superb healer who also debuffs enemies and generates Skill Points. On many teams he is straight-up better than 5-star sustains for the job.
- Natasha (Physical, Abundance). Your free starter healer. Not fancy, endlessly reliable, and she covers you until Gallagher or a limited sustain comes along.
- Lynx / March 7th. Lynx heals and adds survivability; March 7th (the Ice Preservation build) shields and taunts for teams that would rather block than heal.
Build two or three buffers and two sustains from this group and you have a support backbone for life. Consult the relics and light cones guide for the cheap gear that makes them sing.
The 4-star carries worth a slot
You have strong damage options here too, several of them free:
- Herta (Ice, Erudition). Free from the game's earliest events, and a monster in add-heavy content thanks to her follow-up that triggers when enemies drop below half health.
- Serval (Lightning, Erudition). Reliable AoE damage and Shock, another workhorse for waves of enemies.
- Qingque (Quantum, Erudition). The high-roller. Her card-drawing gimmick has real RNG, but when it hits, her single-target and blast damage rival 5-stars.
- Sushang / Xueyi (Physical / Quantum). Break-focused single-target damage that scales beautifully with the Break playstyle.
- Sampo (Wind, Nihility). The glue of a budget damage-over-time team.
Four teams that actually carry
Templates, not laws. Swap the sustain and buffers around the DPS you like best.
1. The starter carry team
Your best early DPS + Asta + Tingyun + Natasha.
This is the team the game basically hands you. Asta and Tingyun stack attack and speed onto a single damage dealer, Natasha keeps everyone standing, and it will walk you through the entire early and midgame. It is also the blueprint every hypercarry team follows later: one carry, two buffers, one healer.
2. Herta blast squad (nearly free)
Herta + Serval + Tingyun (or Asta) + Gallagher.
Two Erudition units means overwhelming AoE, which is perfect for the Pure Fiction side of the endgame where killing many enemies fast is the whole scoring system. Herta and Serval both trigger off enemy waves; the buffer and Gallagher keep the engine fed.
3. Qingque hypercarry
Qingque + Tingyun + Pela + Gallagher.
The spicy one. Pela shreds defense, Tingyun buffs, Gallagher sustains and feeds Skill Points, and Qingque tries to draw her jade tiles for a huge single-target turn. It is streaky by design, but a geared Qingque under full buffs posts numbers that embarrass her rarity.
4. Break / debuff team
Xueyi or Sushang + Pela + Asta + Gallagher.
Built around Weakness Break and Super Break scaling. Pela's defense shred and Gallagher's Break-friendly kit push toughness damage hard, and this style ages well because Break scales with enemy level rather than your character's rarity.
The best deal in the game: 4-star Eidolons
Here is where free-to-play accounts get an edge that whales cannot easily buy for 5-stars. 4-star Eidolons are cheap. Standard-banner 4-stars accumulate as you pull, and many of these characters get dramatically better at E4 or E6. Tingyun, Pela, and several 4-star carries hit meaningfully higher gears with Eidolons that cost you nothing but time. Pushing a core 4-star to E6 is often a bigger real-world power gain than a random limited pull, and it is permanent.
Prioritize Eidolons on the supports you use in every team first. That value compounds across your whole roster.
Where to actually spend your Stellar Jade
None of this means you never pull. It means you pull with leverage. A rock-solid 4-star support base makes every 5-star DPS you eventually land hit harder, so save your Stellar Jade for the limited carries you genuinely want and let this toolkit cover everything else. If you are just starting, the beginner guide sets your first weeks up right, the best characters guide shows who to build toward, and the Paths explained guide makes sense of why these role labels matter.
The takeaway is simple: you are not underpowered, you are under-built. Level the 4-star all-stars, chase their cheap Eidolons, and the game opens up long before your next 5-star ever arrives.
