Honkai: Star Rail Paths Explained: What Every Path Does and How to Build a Team Around Them

Every character in Honkai: Star Rail belongs to a Path, and the Path tells you their job before you read a single skill. This guide explains all eight Paths, the role each one fills, and how to slot them into the standard team template so you stop building four damage dealers and wondering why you die.

Ask a new Honkai: Star Rail player why their team keeps dying and the answer is usually the same: they built four attackers and no support. The game quietly tells you each character's job through their Path, the little icon next to their name, and once you can read Paths at a glance, team building stops being guesswork.

There are eight Paths. Here is what each one is for.

The Paths at a glance

PathRoleJob in one line
DestructionBruiser DPSDeals damage while sustaining itself
The HuntSingle-target DPSDeletes one priority target
EruditionAoE DPSHits the whole enemy line
HarmonyBufferMakes your damage dealer hit harder
NihilityDebuffer / DoTWeakens enemies and stacks damage over time
PreservationShielderBlocks incoming damage with shields
AbundanceHealerRestores HP and keeps the team alive
RemembranceSummonerFields a memosprite that fights alongside you

Learn this table and you can look at any four-character team and immediately see whether it has a plan.

The damage Paths, and when to pick each

Destruction is the beginner-friendly carry. These characters do respectable damage and heal or shield themselves off it, which means they forgive a team that is light on support. If you are still building your first proper unit, a Destruction carry is the safest place to spend.

The Hunt is your single-target answer. Hunt characters concentrate everything on one enemy, which makes them the pick for bosses and elite hunts and a poor pick for waves of weak adds. When the endgame throws a fat health bar at you, this is who you want.

Erudition is the opposite: area damage that clears whole rows at once. Erudition carries shine in content stuffed with many enemies, like the wave-heavy modes, and underperform against a lone boss. Many endgame teams keep one of each so they can answer both kinds of stage.

Which specific carry to invest in shifts every patch, so check the best characters guide and the tier list before committing pulls.

The support Paths are what win fights

Here is the part beginners skip and veterans obsess over. Your damage dealer's numbers are set less by the carry itself and more by the three characters standing behind it.

Harmony is the buffer, and in Honkai: Star Rail the buffer is king. A good Harmony unit can multiply your carry's damage, boost the whole team's speed, or advance turns so your DPS acts more often. Most top teams are built around their Harmony support, not their attacker. If you pull one great Harmony character, your entire account gets stronger.

Nihility does two things depending on the unit: some are debuffers who lower enemy defenses and resistances, and others are damage-over-time engines who stack bleed, burn, shock, or wind shear and let those tick the enemy down. A DoT team is a genuinely different playstyle, and a fun one, built almost entirely from Nihility characters.

Preservation (shields) and Abundance (healing) are your two flavors of sustain. You almost always want exactly one. Shields prevent damage before it lands and pair well with characters who reward not being hit; healers react to damage and offer more raw longevity for attrition fights. Bring a shielder or a healer, rarely both, and use the freed slot for more offense.

Remembrance is the newest Path and the odd one out: these characters summon a memosprite, a semi-independent ally that acts on its own and blurs the line between DPS and support. They add a second body to the field, which changes how a team's turns and damage flow. Treat them as a hybrid and read their kit carefully, because two Remembrance-shaped teams can play nothing alike.

The standard team template

Almost every strong Honkai: Star Rail team is a variation on the same four slots:

  1. Main DPS (Destruction, Hunt, Erudition, or a Remembrance carry).
  2. Amplifier (Harmony), to make that DPS hit harder.
  3. Second amplifier or sub-DPS (a second Harmony, a Nihility debuffer, or a support that also deals damage).
  4. Sustain (one Preservation shielder or one Abundance healer).

That is the shape. A "hypercarry" team pours two supports and a sustain into one attacker. A "DoT" team swaps the single carry for several Nihility stackers. A "follow-up" or "break" team leans on characters whose Paths and mechanics chain together. But the skeleton, one carry, two enablers, one sustain, is the reliable default, and the current best teams are almost all built on it.

Where to go from here

Paths tell you the role. The next layer is the numbers each role wants, and that lives in a character's relics and Light Cone. A Harmony support wants speed and buff-uptime stats; a Hunt carry wants crit and single-target multipliers; a DoT Nihility unit wants effect hit rate. The relics and Light Cones guide breaks down what to farm per Path, and the endgame guide covers the Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow content that all this team building is aimed at.

Read the Path first, build the role it names, and Honkai: Star Rail's combat opens up. Brand new? Start with the beginners guide and pick one Destruction carry to grow around.
