Gear Upgrades Are a Core System Now
Before Update 8, Enshrouded's upgrade loop leaned heavily on weapons. Forging the Path expands that system so armor, shields, wards, rings, pickaxes, and wood chopping axes can also be upgraded with runes.
That changes gearing in two ways. First, old equipment has more room to scale. Second, defensive upgrades matter much more because armor calculations were improved to make protection more noticeable.
What Can Be Upgraded?
Update 8 expands upgrades to:
- weapons
- armor
- shields
- wards
- rings
- pickaxes
- wood chopping axes
Existing equipment from older saves converts into upgradable versions when loaded, so returning players should check their best gear before salvaging anything.
Runes Are More Important
Upgrades use runes, and Update 8 adjusts the rune economy to support more gear slots. Armor, wards, shields, and rings can now be recycled into runes, including converted equipment from earlier versions.
Practical rule: do not hoard underleveled gear forever. If you are not going to use it, recycle it into upgrades for the build you actually play.
Survivor Upgrade Roles
Gear upgrades are handled by different Survivors depending on item type and combat style:
| Survivor | Handles |
| Blacksmith | Warrior equipment |
| Hunter | Ranger equipment |
| Alchemist | Mage equipment |
That means rescue order matters. A Wizard without the Alchemist or a Ranger without the Hunter is leaving power on the table.
Quality Determines Upgrade Potential
The amount of unlockable perks depends on gear quality. Crafted equipment is usually reliable, but higher-quality loot found in the world can have more upgrade potential.
Use this decision flow:
- If a piece fits your build and has high quality, upgrade it.
- If it is low quality but fills a critical slot, upgrade only enough to survive.
- If it does not match your build, recycle it for runes.
- If you are near a major boss, upgrade defense before damage.

Armor Is Worth Upgrading Now
Keen specifically changed armor calculations so better armor levels reduce incoming damage more noticeably. The base version of some armor may feel weaker than before Update 8, but fully upgraded gear should reach the same or better protection.
That makes armor upgrades a priority for:
- Tank builds
- solo players
- deep Shroud expeditions
- co-op frontliners
- boss progression
Damage is tempting, but dead players deal none. Upgrade your chest and shield before chasing perfect damage rolls.
Best Early Upgrade Plan
For a fresh or returning character:
- Rescue the Blacksmith.
- Upgrade your main weapon enough to clear camps reliably.
- Upgrade chest armor and shield/ward.
- Unlock your build's Survivor path: Hunter for Ranger, Alchemist for Wizard.
- Recycle old gear aggressively once you know it is not part of your build.
Update 8 makes gear progression more deliberate. The right play is no longer "equip the highest number and move on"; it is choosing the gear that supports your build and investing runes where they matter.
