Rust's 'Built Different' Wipe: New Player Models, the M16A2, and a Unity 6 Jump

Facepunch's June forced wipe rebuilds Rust's player characters from the ground up, upgrades the engine to Unity 6, and adds the burst-fire M16A2 and a Ballistic Armor set. Here is the breakdown.

A Forced Wipe Worth Talking About

Facepunch ships a forced wipe on the first Thursday of every month, but the June drop, nicknamed Built Different, is more than the usual map reset. It rebuilds the player character from scratch, jumps the engine to Unity 6, and slips a few new toys into the loot pool. Your base is gone either way, so this is a good month to come back fresh.

Here is what changed when the servers came back up on June 4.

Player Models, Rebuilt

The centerpiece is a complete rebuild of the player character. New models, new skeletons, and new animations replace tech that had been showing its age for years. The practical upside is smoother movement and cleaner animation transitions, and it lays the groundwork for better customization down the line. New BDU military clothing and additional hairstyle options ship alongside the rebuild, so your survivor can look the part on day one.

This is foundational work. Most players will feel it more than they see it, in the way characters move and react rather than in any single flashy feature.

Unity 6 and Performance

Built Different also moves Rust onto Unity 6. Engine upgrades are quiet by nature, but this one targets the thing Rust players care about most: performance. Big servers with hundreds of players and sprawling bases punish weaker hardware, and the Unity 6 jump is aimed squarely at steadier frame rates and better memory behavior in those conditions.

New Loot: The M16A2 and Ballistic Armor

For the combat crowd, two additions stand out, and both are loot-only, meaning you find them rather than craft them:

  • M16A2 assault rifle. A burst-capable rifle that sits alongside the staples on the weapon tier list. Burst fire rewards controlled trigger discipline over the full-auto spray of the AK, giving mid-range fights a different rhythm.
  • Ballistic Armor set. A new heavy protection option for players who want to trade mobility for survivability in direct fights and raids.

Because both are loot-only, expect to fight for them at monuments like Launch Site and Military Tunnels rather than teching toward them on the workbench.

Starting the New Wipe

A forced wipe is the great equalizer. Everyone is back on the beach, which makes it the perfect moment for new players to jump in. If this is your first wipe, our Rust beginner's survival guide covers the first hour, and the Rust wiki breaks down the systems that decide whether you survive the night.

The fastest way to enjoy a wipe with friends is your own server. A community Rust server lets you set the wipe schedule, the player count, and the rules, so the only thing left to argue about is base placement.
