Honkai: Star Rail Rin Tohsaka Build Guide: Light Cones, Relics, and the Skill Point Problem

Rin Tohsaka is a Quantum Erudition carry who turns Skill Points into damage, which makes her the most team-dependent unit in the Fate collab. Best Light Cones, relic sets, stat priority, and the team shapes that actually keep her fed.

Table of Contents

Rin costs you Skill Points, and that single fact should drive every decision you make about her. She is a 5-star Quantum carry on the Path of Erudition from the Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works collab, she scales off ATK, she hits everything on screen through a joint follow-up, and she pays for all of it out of the same pool your healer wants. Build her without solving that, and she feels mediocre. Solve it, and she is one of the cleanest AoE carries in the game.

Here is the build, then the reasoning.

What she actually does on her turn

Erudition means multi-target, and Rin is built to make that constant rather than occasional. Her damage sits in her Skill, her Ultimate is the burst finisher, and her Talent drives a joint follow-up attack that can strike every enemy on the field each turn once the conditions are met. Against three or more targets she stops being a character and starts being weather.

The wrinkle is that she is designed to consume Skill Points to push her damage higher, with a little support utility bolted on top. That is an unusual combination, since most Skill Point hogs are purely selfish. It also means she is not a unit you can slot into any team and ignore. If you have never audited your team's budget, read the Skill Point economy guide alongside this one, because with Rin it stops being theory.

Light Cones, in order

Flickering Stars is her signature and the clear best pick. It hands her CRIT Rate, the stat every ATK-scaling DPS is short of early, and it lets allies ignore a slice of enemy DEF, so part of its value leaks into the rest of your team. If you pulled it, use it and skip to the next section.

Eternal Calculus is the free-to-play answer and a genuinely good one for her specifically, because its ATK bonus scales with how many enemies you are fighting and it grants SPD once you face three or more. Erudition units live in exactly those fights. In single-target content it falls off, which is fine, because so does she.

If you have neither, any four-star Erudition-friendly ATK cone holds the seat until you do. Do not burn pulls on a weapon banner to fix a character you are still learning; our Eidolon and spending breakdown covers why the signature is rarely the first thing worth chasing.

Relics: pick by the enemy, not the character

Genius of Brilliant Stars is the default. It ignores a portion of enemy DEF, and more of it against Quantum-weak enemies, which is the content you were going to field her in anyway. DEF ignore multiplies with everything else on her sheet, so it outperforms raw damage percentages more often than people expect.

Scholar Lost in Erudition is the alternative worth farming if your Genius pieces are junk. It raises Skill and Ultimate damage, where essentially all of her output lives, and it does not care what the enemy is weak to.

For the planar, Tengoku Livestream is almost written for her: it rewards CRIT DMG for spending three or more Skill Points in a single turn, which is the exact behavior her kit already pushes you toward. It is the rare ornament whose condition you meet by playing correctly instead of by contorting your rotation.

Stat priority is the ordinary ATK-carry spread: CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG on the body, ATK on the rope, Quantum DMG on the sphere, and ATK on the boots unless you are chasing a speed breakpoint. Aim for roughly a 1:2 CRIT ratio, then stack ATK. Our relic substat priority guide explains what to keep and what to feed to the furnace, and the relics and Light Cones guide has the full set list if you are new to farming.

Intel

[!NOTE] Trace levels follow the archetype: Skill first, then Talent since it powers the follow-up, then Ultimate, with Basic ATK last. Level her Basic only if you are deliberately building her to generate Skill Points rather than spend them, which defeats the point of playing her.

The team problem, and three ways to solve it

Rin's requirement is not a specific character, it is a Skill Point surplus. Any team that gives her one works. Any team that fights her for points makes her look like a bad unit. Three shapes that work:

  • Battery core. Put a generator next to her. Sparkle exists to refund Skill Points to the team through her Ultimate, and Tingyun is the budget version that buffs while staying cheap. This is the most forgiving option and the one to build first.
  • Cheap sustain. Pair her with a healer that does not want the point either. Gallagher runs off an enhanced Basic, Aventurine and Fu Xuan can go long stretches without pressing Skill, and Luocha heals passively. Every turn your sustain spends basic attacking is a turn Rin gets to spend.
  • Second buffer, low appetite. Robin and Ruan Mei add damage without eating much of the budget, which lets you run Rin plus one battery plus one buffer plus one sustain and still end most turns in the black.

The pattern to avoid is Rin next to another Skill Point hog. She and Archer both consume points to scale, so putting the two Fate carries in one team is thematically lovely and mechanically miserable. If you want the collab units together, our 4.4 team guide has the workable arrangements, and Gilgamesh is a friendlier partner than Archer because his damage comes off ally actions rather than your pool.

Where she is worth it, and where she is not

Erudition carries are made for wide content, so her ceiling is in Pure Fiction and any Memory of Chaos half stuffed with adds. That is where the joint follow-up compounds and where Eternal Calculus turns on. Our endgame guide breaks down which modes reward AoE and which punish it.

Against a single elite boss she is fine and no better than fine. If your account already has a strong AoE carry and your gap is single-target damage, she is not the fix, and skipping her is a legitimate call. She arrived on the collab's second banner rather than alongside the free unit, so the real question was always whether to split a reserve across both slots. Our Fate collab overview lays out that schedule and the free rewards you keep either way, and if her banner has already rotated out, everything above still applies whenever she returns.

One honest caveat: collab units get re-evaluated fast once the community finishes theorycrafting, and exact numbers can shift with the release build. The gear framework above is stable because it follows from her archetype, not from a specific multiplier. We fold in changes as they land, and you can always check the HSR tier list for where she currently sits.

Before you pull

Grab the free stuff first. Every active code on the HSR codes page is Stellar Jade you did not have to earn, and the free-to-play income guide tells you honestly how many pulls a patch actually gives you. If Rin is the unit you want, walk in with a full pity and a plan for who is going to hand her Skill Points, and she will pay you back in Pure Fiction for a long time.
