HoYoverse used to be the Genshin company. In 2026 it runs a whole constellation: three action and RPG flagships, an aging pioneer that started it all, an otome game with a devoted following, and new projects circling in beta. They share a house style and a business model, but they do not share your time equally, and picking the wrong one to start in 2026 is a costly mistake measured in hundreds of hours.
So this is a ranking with its criteria on the table. We are weighing four things: content quality, generosity to free players, active development, and accessibility (platforms and how easy it is to start now). That last pair is what separates a great game from a great game to begin in 2026, and it reshuffles the order more than raw scale does. If you only care about which world is biggest, Genshin wins and you can stop reading. If you care which is the best game to actually live in this year, keep going.
1. Zenless Zone Zero
The best HoYoverse game to start in 2026, and it is not particularly close on our criteria. ZZZ is a fast, combo-driven urban-fantasy action game with the highest skill ceiling and the flashiest combat in the lineup, all parry, dodge, and assist-swap. But combat is not why it tops the list. It tops it on generosity and access.
Version 3.x has been handing out free Polychrome by the thousand, the second-anniversary rewards piled on Agent selectors and pulls, and the economy is consistently cited as the most player-friendly HoYoverse has ever shipped. Then it did the thing none of its siblings have: it launched on Steam in mid-2026 and added Xbox, giving it the widest platform reach of any HoYo game with full cross-save. 2. Honkai: Star Rail
The one that loses the top spot on a technicality and would win it on volume. Star Rail is a turn-based RPG with the most accessible combat in the family: no reflexes required, just team-building and rotations, which makes it the easiest for newcomers and low-end hardware. Behind that friendly surface is an enormous, high-quality content pipeline that barely pauses for breath, with a new version live and the next already dated.
It is generous, though a step behind ZZZ, and its only real weakness on our scorecard is reach: no Xbox, no Steam, so you are on mobile, PC client, or PlayStation. If you want the deepest turn-based story-and-strategy experience and do not need it on Steam, this is arguably the single best game here; it just is not quite the easiest to start. 3. Genshin Impact
The biggest, the most important, and, in 2026, no longer the one we would tell a new player to start. Genshin is still the flagship: the largest open world, the deepest lore, the cultural anchor of the whole company, now well into its 7.x era exploring Snezhnaya. Nothing else HoYo makes has this much place to get lost in.
But our criteria are unkind to it where it matters for a 2026 start. It is the stingiest of the active flagships, with single-target five-star banners and comparatively lean free income, and it is the least accessible: no Xbox, no Steam, on a platform list that has not kept pace with its younger siblings. It ranks below them not because it is a worse game, but because it asks the most and gives the least of the three, and the systems around its gorgeous world are the oldest in the lineup. 4. Tears of Themis
The niche that quietly outlasts the doubters. Tears of Themis is an otome game, a romance and detective visual novel wrapped around light card battles, and it hit its fifth anniversary in 2026 with an active event calendar and a small, dedicated audience. It is not comparable to the action flagships and does not try to be. Judged on its own terms, it is a healthy, well-supported game for players who want narrative and romance over combat, and it ranks here rather than higher only because its appeal is deliberately narrow. If it is the game for you, you already suspect it is.
5. Honkai Impact 3rd
The pioneer, and the one showing its age. Honkai Impact 3rd is the 2016 character-action game that is the stylistic ancestor of ZZZ, and its Part 2 storyline is still receiving updates. But it is unmistakably a mature, declining title now, running on a maintenance-plus-story cadence for a long-time fanbase rather than courting newcomers. Its combat still has bite and its story still matters to the people invested in it, and neither of those makes it a good place to start a decade in. Play it if the Honkai saga has its hooks in you. Skip it as a first HoYo game.
(Honorable mention: Guns GirlZ, miHoYo's very first mobile game from 2014, is the true origin point, but its Western servers shut down years ago and it lives on only in Japan and China. History, not a recommendation.)
On the horizon
Two genuine new games are worth watching, and one rumor is worth ignoring:
- Petit Planet is HoYoverse's cozy life-sim, an Animal-Crossing-style game with no combat, through beta and slated for a 2026 global launch. It is the real 2026 new-game story and a sharp departure from the company's action pedigree.
- Varsapura was revealed in late 2025 as a new Unreal Engine 5 open-world action title with a realistic, modern-urban look. It is genuinely in development with no announced platforms or date, so treat it as distant, not soon.
- Everything else you have seen, the Monster-Hunter-style project, the various "internal" games, is leak-and-rumor tier. Do not plan around it.
Which one is for you
The one-line version: start with Zenless Zone Zero for the best mix of generosity, access, and momentum in 2026. Pick Honkai: Star Rail if you want the deepest, most accessible turn-based game and do not need it on Steam. Play Genshin Impact for the biggest world, eyes open about the tightest economy. Choose Tears of Themis if romance and story are the whole point, and reserve Honkai Impact 3rd for franchise devotees.
