Which Standard 5-Star Should You Pick in Wuthering Waves? The Selector, Settled

Wuthering Waves hands new players a choice between five standard 5-star Resonators: Verina, Jianxin, Calcharo, Encore, and Lingyang. One of them is the near-automatic pick for almost every account, and it is not one of the flashy damage dealers. Here is the ranking, the reasoning, and what to do if you already have the obvious answer.

Table of Contents

Pick Verina.

If that is all you came for, you can close the tab. For nearly every account, the Wuthering Waves standard 5-star selector has one correct answer, and it is the quiet Spectro healer rather than any of the three characters swinging swords in the trailer. But the reasoning matters, because it tells you something about how this game is built, and there are real edge cases where a different pick is smarter.

Here is the whole decision, laid out.

What you are actually choosing

The selector lets you lock in one of the five permanent standard-banner Resonators instead of leaving it to luck. Those five are:

  • Verina, Spectro, healer and buffer
  • Jianxin, Aero, support and shielder
  • Calcharo, Electro, DPS
  • Encore, Fusion, DPS
  • Lingyang, Glacio, DPS

The catch that shapes everything: these characters live on the standard pool, which never leaves and never runs discounted events. Limited banner characters come and go with their own guides and reruns, but a standard 5-star is only ever obtained slowly, through your standard convenes over the entire life of the account. So the selector is not just "who is strongest." It is "who is most painful to get any other way, and most useful for the longest time."

That framing is why the supports win.

Why Verina is the pick

Damage dealers are the thing this game sells you constantly. Every patch brings a new limited five-star DPS with a splashy kit, and the best team comps reshuffle around them. What it almost never brings is a great, generous, easy-to-get healer, because a healer that also buffs your whole team is the glue that makes every one of those shiny DPS units function.

Verina is that glue. She heals, she buffs damage for the whole squad, and she asks for very little field time to do it, which is exactly what you want from a support slot that has to make room for a hypercarry. She slots into essentially any team composition you will ever build, from your first roster to your endgame one. She is not the highest-ceiling support in the game anymore, but "reliable, universal, and only available on the standard banner" is the precise profile the selector should be spent on.

Put simply: the DPS you want will come from limited banners you pull anyway. The support that holds them together is the thing worth guaranteeing now.

The ranking, if you want the full order

1. Verina. Universal healer and team buffer. The default for almost everyone. Grab her and stop thinking about it.

2. Jianxin. The runner-up, and a genuine pick if you already own Verina. She brings Aero shielding, crowd-gathering, and support utility, so a second support secures the other flex slot on a lot of teams. Less essential than she once was, still useful.

3. Calcharo. The best of the standard DPS options as a floor. He is a strong, self-sufficient Electro carry who can hold down your damage slot while you build toward a limited main. Reasonable if you have no DPS at all and no healer problem, but understand you are buying a stopgap.

4. Encore. Fusion DPS with a fun, bursty kit. Perfectly playable, and if you simply love the character, that is a valid reason. Meta-wise she sits behind the limited Fusion options.

5. Lingyang. Glacio DPS. Capable in the right hands, but the hardest of the five to justify on value alone. Pick him because you want him, not because a spreadsheet said so.

If you already have Verina

Good problem. Once your healer slot is solved, the selector logic flips from "safest support" to "which permanent unit fills my actual gap." If your teams still lack a second support, take Jianxin. If you are DPS-starved and clearing content is a struggle, Calcharo is the sturdiest damage floor. And if none of that applies because your limited roster is already deep, then the honest answer is to pick the character whose design you like most. A standard 5-star you enjoy fielding beats an "optimal" one who sits on the bench.

A word on the weapons and your Astrites

Two things worth saying so you do not overspend around this decision.

First, the selector itself is a gift, so taking it costs you nothing. What you should not do is dump your saved Astrites into the standard banner chasing extra standard characters. Those pulls are far better spent on limited event banners for the DPS and supports that actually define the meta. Keep your standard pulls incidental.

Second, do not stress the weapon side of this. Standard 5-star weapons are fine, but your damage dealers care most about their signature limited weapons, and a well-chosen 4-star or battle-pass weapon covers you in the meantime. The character selector is the decision that matters here; the rest is noise.

Bottom line

The selector is a small choice that new players agonize over and veterans answer in a second. Take Verina, keep your Astrites for the banners that matter, and let your limited pulls supply the firepower. If Verina is already yours, fill your real gap or follow your heart, both are correct.
