The Short Answer

Echoes are Wuthering Waves' gear system, equivalent to artifacts in other gacha games. You equip five Echoes per Resonator under a total Cost budget of 12, all ideally sharing one Sonata Effect for the 5-piece set bonus. Your 4-Cost Echo is the "main" Echo: it grants the active Echo Skill you slot into your rotation. Get the Sonata, the Cost layout, and the main stats right, and gearing matters as much as the team you build.

The Cost System

Each Echo has a Cost of 1, 3, or 4, and your five Echoes must fit within a 12 Cost cap. The standard layout is:

Intel

4 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 12

  • One 4-Cost Echo (your main Echo and Echo Skill).
  • Two 3-Cost Echoes (your main damage-bonus slots).
  • Two 1-Cost Echoes (flexible flat stat slots).

Sonata Effects (Set Bonuses)

Every Echo belongs to a Sonata. Matching them unlocks set bonuses:

  • 2-piece: a small element or stat bonus.
  • 5-piece: the powerful effect you build around, unlocked when all five Echoes share the same Sonata.

Pick the Sonata that matches your Resonator's role and element. Damage carries usually want their matching element Sonata (or the energy-regen Sonata for fast Concerto), healers want the restorative Sonata, and pure supports often run an energy or buff-oriented Sonata. Check each carry's page from the tier list for its recommended set.

Best Main Stats by Slot

Slot (Cost)Recommended main stat
4-CostCRIT Rate or CRIT DMG (DPS); Healing Bonus (healer)
3-CostElement DMG Bonus matching your Resonator
3-CostATK% (or Energy Regen on supports)
1-CostATK%
1-CostATK% (HP%/DEF% for shielders and some healers)

For most damage dealers the goal is a clean CRIT, Element DMG, ATK% spread. Energy Regen is the exception: a support that cannot ult on time is dead weight, so build it where the rotation needs it.

Substats and Tuning

Leveling an Echo unlocks substats through Tuning, paid for with Tuners. Prioritize, in rough order:

  1. CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG (aim toward a roughly 1 to 2 ratio).
  2. ATK% and flat ATK.
  3. Energy Regen if your rotation is starved for Concerto.

How to Not Waste Resources

  • Only tune 4-Cost and 3-Cost Echoes you are sure about. Tuners are limited.
  • Match the Sonata first, stats second. A perfect-stat Echo off-set is worse than a clean 5-set.
  • Reuse Echo EXP and Tuners through the union/data-merge systems as you upgrade.
  • Grab free Astrite from the Wuthering Waves codes page and pull smart using the Convene pity guide, so you spend gear resources on Resonators you will keep.

Once your carry has a clean 5-set Echo build, slot it into one of the comps in our best team comps guide and you are ready for endgame.
