Ask ten V Rising players how Gear Level works and half will tell you spells count toward it. They do not. That single misconception sends people farming the wrong things and hitting boss walls they should have blown through. So before any weapon or spell talk, get the number right, because everything else is built on it.
This guide covers the current live build, which is Invaders of Oakveil (Update 1.1). Balance shifts across hotfixes, so double-check specific numbers against the latest patch notes, but the systems below are stable.
Gear Level is six items, and spells are not one
Your Gear Level is the sum of the levels of exactly six equipped items: your weapon, four armor pieces (chest, gloves, legs, boots), and one jewelry or magic-source slot. That is it. There is no head slot and no cloak feeding your gear score, whatever an auto-generated guide tells you, and spells and spell jewels contribute nothing to the number.
Two consequences drive your whole progression:
- Armor is the fastest lever. Four of your six gear slots are armor, so crafting the next armor tier the moment its materials unlock raises your Gear Level faster than any weapon or jewelry swap. When you feel under-leveled for a boss, it is almost always armor you are behind on.
- Gear Level is a PvE stat only. Against the world it is roughly +1% damage dealt and -1% taken per level you are over a target, and a harsher -4%/+4% per level when you are under. In PvP it does nothing to your damage: there, power is build, not gear number. Two vampires at wildly different Gear Levels do the same PvP damage, and the fight is decided by weapon skills, spells, jewels, and blood.
The 14 weapons, and how "mastery" actually works
There are 14 weapon types: the base eleven (Sword, Greatsword, Axes, Mace, Spear, Reaper, Slasher, Whip, Crossbow, Longbow, Pistols) plus the three Oakveil added (Twinblades, Throwing Daggers, Claws). If an older guide treats Twinblades as an original weapon, it is out of date.
The important correction: there is no weapon-mastery XP grind anymore. The old Weapon Expertise leveling bar was removed. Now a weapon grants up to three skills, unlocked by material tier: a bare bone weapon has only its basic combo, and the primary and heavy skills fill in as you climb the eight crafting tiers (Bone, Reinforced Bone, Copper, Merciless Copper, Iron, Merciless Iron, Dark Silver, Sanguine). On top of that, skill variants drop from V Blood bosses and can be swapped onto a weapon. So "mastering" a weapon means picking a type and farming boss variants for it, not filling a per-weapon level bar.
Which type to main depends on the server:
- For PvE: the Reaper is the king of clearing packs, the Spear delivers the best single-target boss burst through Thousand Spears, and Slashers, Twinblades, and the Greatsword give you mobility and sustained damage. Crossbow snipes casters from range.
- For PvP: Slashers (invisibility and armor-expose) and Twinblades define the mobility meta, with Throwing Daggers strong for zoning and snares. Whip and Mace are more situational.
You are not locked in, so keep a second weapon on your bar for the situations your main is bad at (a boss-killer plus a mob-clearer is the classic pairing).
The six spell schools
There are six schools, unchanged in count: Blood, Chaos, Frost, Illusion, Unholy, Storm. Storm was added back in the Gloomrot era, not Oakveil, so do not credit the new expansion for it; Oakveil added new spells within the existing six.
Each school gives you a Veil (a dash that heals a slice of your health when you land the follow-up hit, plus a school effect), a set of primary and secondary spells you can mix across schools, and an Ultimate. Oakveil changed how you get them: spells and now Veils unlock from specific V Blood bosses rather than pure spell points. Jewels modify individual spells (one jewel per ability, Veils included, but not Ultimates) and now roll on five tiers, each adding a perk up to three.
The stat that matters here is Spell Power, and it comes from your magic-source and jewelry slot, gear affixes, and the Scholar blood type, not from Gear Level. Cooldown Reduction is the other caster pillar. Ultimates were reworked to no longer crit and to scale off a dedicated Ultimate Power attribute instead. If you want a caster, you build Spell Power and cooldown, and you lean Scholar blood, whose Tier-3 cooldown reset is the spike that makes the build sing.
Blood is the multiplier on your build
Blood type quality unlocks more buff tiers, up to five at 100% quality, and it is where a weapon-and-spell build becomes a build:
- Scholar for casters: spell power and cooldown reduction.
- Brute for sustain melee (leech and regen), the benchmark for a Reaper physical build.
- Warrior for physical burst and parry openers.
- Rogue for crit builds like dual-axes.
Oakveil also added Corrupted blood, a high-risk option: reduced Corrupted damage and 5% leech, but +10% damage taken from everything else. Our blood types guide has the full tier breakdown; for progression, just match your blood to your damage type and quality-hunt as you go.
The progression route, early to late
Gear Level climbs by beating V Blood bosses, and there are 64 of them spanning roughly Gear Level 16 to 91. Exact thresholds drift between patches, so treat these as bands:
- Early, Farbane Woods (~GL 16 to 30): Alpha Wolf for Wolf Form travel, Keely the Frost Archer, then grab Lidia the Chaos Archer early for Chaos Volley, one of the best damage spells in the game. Do not skip Nicholaus the Fallen: he unlocks The Study, which gates most mid-game recipes.
- Mid, Dunley Farmlands (~GL 40 to 50): Vincent the Frostbringer and Tristan the Vampire Hunter (Tristan drops the Greatsword and Tier-3 spells). Push toward Dark Silver weapons and higher armor here.
- Late, Silverlight to Gloomrot to Mortium to Oakveil (~GL 60 to 91): Mairwyn the Elementalist around GL 70 unlocks Tier-3 jewels, the Gloomrot and Silverlight bosses feed Sanguine-tier materials, and Oakveil's new V Bloods sit at the top with Dracula as the traditional capstone.
Our boss progression guide has the full order and drops; the rule of thumb is armor first when you stall, then the boss that unlocks your next weapon tier.
Endgame: Ancestral and Legendary weapons
Sanguine is the top craftable tier, but the real endgame is the Ancestral weapon system:
- Epic Ancestral (blue) weapons are crafted from Epic Ancestral Shards at the Ancestral Forge. Each rolls a random spell-school infusion (its secondary skill inflicts Leech, Ignite, Condemn, Weaken, Chill, or Static) plus three random attributes. Shards drop from high-level carriers, Rift Incursions, and Shard Bearers.
- Legendary Ancestral weapons fuse a Sanguine weapon with a Legendary shard and Onyx Tears. They hit the top Gear Level, add a big flat Physical Power bump, and modify both the weapon's skills.
- The Fusion Forge, new in 1.1, lets you fuse two Ancestral weapons or two jewels to extract and combine the exact attributes you want. This is where Gear Level plateaus and pure build optimization takes over.
That is the whole arc: armor to raise the number, weapon variants and spell jewels to shape the damage, blood to multiply it, and Ancestral gear to min-max once the number stops mattering. If you are just arriving in the new region, pair this with the Invaders of Oakveil guide and check where your weapon of choice lands on the V Rising tier list before you commit your Sanguine mats to a Legendary.
