A good Palworld base is a machine you never touch. Ore refines itself, crops water and harvest on a loop, furnaces stay lit, and the storage fills while you are three biomes away hunting a boss. A bad base is a traffic jam of Pals wandering past a task none of them can do. The difference is almost entirely about matching work suitability to the right Pals, and it is one of the highest-value things you can optimize early.
Every Pal has one or more work suitabilities, each with a level from 1 to 4 (and higher on some of the strongest workers). Higher level means faster work at that job. Assign a Pal to a base and it will automatically hunt for tasks that match its suitabilities. Your job is to make sure the base has a Pal for every task it generates, and that your best workers are not stuck doing chores below their level.
The 12 work suitabilities
Palworld has twelve work types. Here is what each one covers and the kind of Pal you want on it.
| Suitability | What it does | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Kindling | Powers furnaces, smelts ore, cooks food | A high-level Fire Pal |
| Watering | Waters crops, runs water wheels | A high-level Water Pal |
| Planting | Sows seeds in plantations | Grass Pals, often multi-job |
| Handiwork | Crafts at benches, runs production lines | Your single most important stat |
| Gathering | Harvests ripe crops and berries | Nimble multi-job Pals |
| Lumbering | Chops wood | Big, strong Pals |
| Mining | Breaks ore and stone nodes | Ground and rock Pals |
| Medicine Production | Makes medicine at the workbench | Grass and support Pals |
| Cooling | Runs the cooler for refrigeration and cake | Ice Pals |
| Generating Electricity | Powers the electric generator | Electric Pals |
| Farming | Produces ranch goods (eggs, milk, wool, honey) | Ranch Pals |
| Transporting | Carries finished items into storage | Fast, hands-capable Pals |
Two of these matter more than the rest for how smooth your base feels: Handiwork and Transporting.
Handiwork is the stat that runs your base
Almost every crafting station uses Handiwork, so a base short on Handiwork level is a base where everything is slow. This is the one suitability to overinvest in. Anubis is the classic answer, a high-level Handiwork Pal that is relatively easy to acquire and turns your production lines from a crawl into a sprint. Newer high-suitability Pals push the ceiling further, but if you have Anubis on Handiwork and nothing else optimized, your base already feels twice as fast.
Keep at least two strong Handiwork Pals in any working base. Crafting is the bottleneck that everything else waits on.
Transporting is the fix for the "nothing gets stored" problem
If your Pals harvest and refine but items pile up on the ground instead of going into chests, you are short on Transporting. It is easy to forget because no station uses it, but without it your base clogs. Fast Pals with a hauling suitability keep the floor clear. Wumpo and its variants are dependable haulers, and dedicating one or two Pals purely to Transporting prevents the most common base slowdown there is.
The rest, quickly
- Kindling: put your best Fire Pal here so furnaces never stall. Jormuntide Ignis is a longtime standout, and the strongest Fire workers keep every furnace in the base lit at once.
- Watering: a strong Water Pal like Jormuntide keeps a large plantation supplied on its own.
- Planting and Medicine: Grass Pals like Lyleen shine here and often carry Handiwork and Gathering on the side, making them fantastic all-rounders.
- Mining: rock and dragon-type diggers such as Digtoise (great early) or Astegon (high level) keep your ore and stone flowing. Ore is your permanent bottleneck for ingots, so a dedicated miner is worth it.
- Generating Electricity: as soon as you unlock electric stations, an Electric Pal like Orserk keeps the power on.
- Cooling: an Ice Pal such as Frostallion runs your cooler for cake ingredients and refrigeration.
- Farming: stock a ranch with the producers you need. Chikipi for eggs, Mozzarina for milk, Beegarde for honey, wool Pals for cloth. Cake, the item you need for breeding, depends on this.
Getting cake reliably ties directly into the breeding guide, since a breeding farm is only as good as the ranch feeding it.
The tricks that actually keep a base running
Assigning the right Pals is step one. Keeping them working is step two, and it is where most bases quietly fall apart.
- Manage sanity. Working Pals lose SAN over time. A tired Pal works slowly, and a broken one wanders off or gets sick. Build a Hot Spring so Pals can rest and recover, and keep a bed and plenty of food nearby. A rested base outproduces a bigger, exhausted one.
- Feed them well. Keep the feed box stocked with food that fills them fast. Hungry Pals stop working. Higher-tier food also restores sanity.
- Chase Work Speed passives. Passive skills like Work Speed boosts (the "Serious", "Artisan", and "Lucky" style traits) stack on top of suitability level. A Pal with a top suitability and two Work Speed passives is worth several ordinary workers. This is where breeding pays off: breed for a great worker with stacked passives.
- Condense your best worker. Pal Condensation raises a Pal's star rank, which increases its work speed. Taking your key Handiwork or Mining Pal to four stars is a huge, permanent base upgrade.
- Design the layout for short trips. Put the ore, the furnace, and the ingot bench close together so Kindling and Transporting Pals are not marching across the whole base. Tight layouts cut wasted pathing time more than most people expect. The base building guide covers efficient layouts in depth.
Where to take it next
Match every suitability the base generates, overload on Handiwork, never skimp on Transporting, and keep everyone rested and fed. Do that and your base becomes the machine that funds your expeditions. For which Pals are worth chasing overall, cross-reference the Palworld tier list, and once your economy is humming, spend the surplus on the tech that unlocks better stations in the technology points guide. Exact best-in-slot workers shift as new Pals arrive, so confirm the current top picks in-game, but the system underneath, level plus passives plus condensation plus sanity, does not change.
