Honkai: Star Rail Warp System Explained: Pity, 50/50, and Every Banner Number

Every Warp in Honkai: Star Rail is governed by numbers the game never puts on screen: an 90-pull character pity, a 50/50 coin flip, a separate 80-pull Light Cone track, and a guarantee flag that quietly follows you between banners. Here is exactly how each banner works, what carries over, and how to plan your pulls around the real hard-pity math.

Table of Contents

The Warp screen tells you the rates. It does not tell you the rules. Honkai: Star Rail buries the numbers that actually decide whether your next pull lands the character you want: when soft pity kicks in, what the 50/50 really means, and which of your counters follow you to the next banner and which reset to zero. Get those wrong and you spend passes you did not need to. Get them right and you can walk into a banner knowing, almost to the pull, what it will cost.

Two currencies, two passes

Everything starts with what you feed the machine. HSR runs on two pull items, and mixing them up is the first mistake new players make.

  • Star Rail Pass pulls only on the Stellar Warp (the permanent standard banner).
  • Star Rail Special Pass pulls on the limited Character Event Warp and Light Cone Event Warp.

You buy both with Stellar Jade at a rate of 160 Jade per pass, so your real pull economy is a Jade economy. If you are still learning where that Jade comes from, our Stellar Jade F2P income guide breaks down every recurring source; this guide is about what happens after you have the passes in hand.

The base rates, and why they lie a little

The posted odds look brutal: a 0.6% base chance at a 5-star per Warp, and 5.1% at a 4-star. Taken at face value, that reads like a slot machine. It is not, because of pity.

The number that matters is the consolidated rate, which folds in pity across a full cycle. Averaged over many pulls, your real 5-star rate lands near 1.6%, or roughly one 5-star every 62 pulls. That gap between 0.6% and 1.6% is the entire reason pity exists: the closer you climb to the hard ceiling, the more the odds swing in your favor.

Character Event Warp: the 90 and the coin flip

This is the banner you will spend the most on, so learn it cold.

MechanicValue
5-star hard pity90 pulls (guaranteed by pull 90)
5-star soft pitystarts around pull 74
Featured chance50/50 on your first 5-star
4-star hard pityevery 10 pulls
4-star featured50/50 among the three rate-up 4-stars

Here is the flow. When your 5-star lands, you have a 50% chance it is the featured character. If you win, wonderful. If you lose the 50/50, the game sets a hidden guarantee flag, and your next 5-star on any Character Event Warp is the featured unit, no coin flip. So the true worst case for a featured character is not 90 pulls, it is roughly 180: one full pity to lose the 50/50, a second to cash the guarantee.

Two subtleties people miss:

  • Soft pity is real. From about pull 74 your 5-star odds ramp hard every pull, which is why most players see their 5-star between 74 and 80, not at 90. Budget for the average (~75), not the ceiling.
  • The coin flip is a true 50%. There is no streak protection beyond the single guarantee. Losing three 50/50s in a row across three banners is unlucky, but nothing in the system prevents it.

What carries over (and what does not)

This is the part that saves or wastes the most passes, because HSR's counters do not all live in the same place.

  • Character pity is shared across every Character Event Warp. Pull 40 into this patch's banner, get nothing, and those 40 pulls carry to the next character banner. Your progress toward 90 never evaporates when the banner rotates.
  • The 50/50 guarantee flag is also shared across character banners. Lose the 50/50 on one character, skip a patch, and the guarantee is still waiting when the character you actually want arrives.
  • Light Cone pity is completely separate. It does not touch character pity in either direction.
  • Standard (Stellar Warp) pity is its own third track. Pulls there never advance your limited-banner counters.

The practical upshot: a "wasted" 40-pull loss is not wasted. It is a down payment on the next character you chase.

Light Cone Event Warp: the 80 and the 75/25

The signature weapon banner runs on a stingier but shorter set of rules.

MechanicValue
5-star hard pity80 pulls
5-star soft pitystarts around pull 65
Featured chance75/25 (75% it is the banner Light Cone)
Guaranteenext 5-star is featured if you lose

The trade-offs versus the character banner: pity is lower (80 not 90) and the featured odds are better (75% not 50%), but there is no shared carryover with anything else, and the guarantee flag here is independent too. Because a signature Light Cone can add serious multiplier to a DPS, it is worth pulling only when the character is a main damage carry or a support whose cone changes their kit. For everyone else, a good 4-star or free Light Cone does most of the job. Our relics and Light Cones guide covers the F2P substitutes that punch above their rarity.

Standard Warp: slow, but not pointless

The permanent Stellar Warp uses Star Rail Passes, has the same 90 hard pity, and hands you a 5-star from the standard pool with no rate-up. Its one great feature is the milestone selector: at a set number of total standard pulls the game lets you hand-pick a standard 5-star character, which is how many accounts secure a pillar like a strong healer or a reliable sustain early. Spend your free Star Rail Passes here, work steadily toward the selector, and never buy Special Passes to feed it.

How to actually plan a banner

Numbers only help if you turn them into a decision. A simple framework:

  1. Decide the character is a want, not a maybe. Losing a 50/50 for a unit you were lukewarm on is how accounts go broke. Weigh it against your roster with the best characters guide.
  2. Check your carried pity and guarantee. If you are already 40 pulls in and holding a guarantee, the character is nearly free. If you are at zero with no guarantee, budget for the full ~180-pull worst case.
  3. Count your Jade honestly. At 160 Jade per pass, 90 pulls is 14,400 Jade. Know whether you can reach soft pity before you start, not halfway down the hole.
  4. Decide on Eidolons and the Light Cone separately. Those are additional 50/50s and a separate 80-pity track. Whether they are worth it is a per-character question our Eidolons guide answers case by case.

The one rule that keeps you solvent

If you take nothing else from this: your pity and your guarantee are assets you carry between banners, so never panic-pull a character you do not want just because you are "close." Close means you are close on the next character too. The players who stay F2P and still land every unit they care about are not luckier; they are the ones who treat the 50/50 as a coin they only flip for characters worth the risk. Pair that discipline with a steady Jade income and a daily routine that never leaves rewards on the table, and the Warp screen stops being a gamble and starts being a plan.
