Terraria never tells you what to fight next, and that silence is where most new worlds stall. You can technically wander into any biome and poke whatever you find, but the game is quietly built around a chain: each boss drops the gear, or flips the switch, that makes the next one survivable. Get the order right and the difficulty curve feels fair. Get it wrong and you are throwing a copper shortsword at the Destroyer wondering why nothing is working.
Here is the whole chain, in the order that actually respects that curve, with the trigger that gates each fight and the reason it matters.
The one rule that governs everything
Progression in Terraria splits into two eras separated by a single boss. Everything before the Wall of Flesh is pre-Hardmode. The instant you kill the Wall of Flesh, the world permanently enters Hardmode: tougher enemies spawn, new ores seed into your world, and a fresh boss ladder opens. You cannot go back. So the honest structure of the game is "get strong enough to beat the Wall of Flesh," then "start over at a higher weight class."
Keep that split in your head and the list below reads like a story instead of a menu.
Pre-Hardmode: building up to the Wall
| Order | Boss | How it is triggered | Why you fight it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | King Slime (optional) | Slime Crown, or rare natural spawn | Easy warm-up, Ninja gear and the Slime Hook |
| 2 | Eye of Cthulhu | Suspicious Looking Eye at night | First real gatekeeper, drops evil ore-tier loot |
| 3 | Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu | Worm Food (Corruption) or Bloody Spine (Crimson) | Gives Shadow/Crimson gear and demonite/crimtane |
| 4 | Queen Bee (optional) | Break a larva in an Underground Jungle hive | Bee gear, a strong early bow and stinger weapons |
| 5 | Skeletron | Talk to the Old Man at the Dungeon at night | Unlocks the Dungeon, the gateway to serious loot |
| 6 | Deerclops (optional) | Deer Thing during a Blizzard, or the item | Fun mid-tier fight, the Pew-matic and Eye Bone |
| 7 | Wall of Flesh | Guide Voodoo Doll dropped into Underworld lava | Ends pre-Hardmode, starts Hardmode |
A few notes that save runs:
- Do your evil boss before the Jungle. Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu gives you the ore to craft Nightmare or Deathbringer picks, which you need to mine deeper and to break the next tier of blocks.
- Skeletron is the true midpoint. The Dungeon behind it holds the Muramasa, the Cobalt Shield line, and the water-bolt tome that carries many mage runs for a long time.
- Grind a full pre-Hardmode set before the Wall. Molten armor plus a Molten weapon (from Hellstone in the Underworld) is the standard "ready for the Wall of Flesh" checkpoint. Build a long bridge across the Underworld first: the Wall chases you, and running out of floor is how it kills you.
Crossing into Hardmode
The moment the Wall of Flesh dies, three things happen at once. Two new biome stripes (Hallow and more Corruption or Crimson) cut diagonally through your world, a Pwnhammer drops, and the message tells you the ancient spirits have been released. Smash a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar with that Pwnhammer to seed the first Hardmode ore (Cobalt or Palladium) into the underground. That ore is your first Hardmode armor. Mine it, gear up, and only then start the next boss ladder.
Hardmode: the mechanical trio and beyond
| Order | Boss | How it is triggered | What it gates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Queen Slime (optional) | Gelatin Crystal in the Hallow | Early Hardmode mount and wings-tier loot |
| 9 | The Destroyer | Mechanical Worm at night | One of three "mech" bosses |
| 10 | The Twins | Mechanical Eye at night | One of three "mech" bosses |
| 11 | Skeletron Prime | Mechanical Skull at night | One of three "mech" bosses |
| 12 | Plantera | Break a Plantera's Bulb after all 3 mechs | Drops the Temple Key, the biggest gate in the game |
| 13 | Golem | Lihzahrd Power Cell at the Jungle Temple altar | Post-Plantera loot, opens the endgame |
| 14 | Empress of Light (optional) | Kill a Prismatic Lacewing in the Hallow at night | One of the best weapons in the game |
| 15 | Duke Fishron (optional) | Truffle Worm as bait in the Ocean | Wings, the Tsunami, the Fishron mount |
| 16 | Lunatic Cultist | Kill the cultists at the Dungeon entrance post-Golem | Starts the Lunar Events |
| 17 | Lunar Events (4 Pillars) | Automatic after the Cultist | Fragments for endgame gear |
| 18 | Moon Lord | Automatic after all 4 Pillars, or Celestial Sigil | The final boss |
The three mechanical bosses are interchangeable in order, but fight the Destroyer first if you are a ranged or summoner player: it drops the Megashark parts and Hallowed bars flow fastest from it. Beat all three and craft a full set of Hallowed armor before you even think about Plantera.
Plantera is the wall that Hardmode is really built around. Until she is dead, the Underground Jungle stays lethal and the Jungle Temple door will not open no matter how hard you hit it. Her bulbs only start growing after every mechanical boss is dead, so there is no skipping ahead. Beating her drops the Temple Key and floods the world with post-Plantera enemies that carry the loot you need for Golem.
After Golem, head back to the Dungeon. Cultists will have gathered at the entrance. Killing them summons the Lunatic Cultist, which kicks off the four Celestial Pillars (Solar, Nebula, Vortex, Stardust). Clear all four, survive the invasions, and Moon Lord descends. That fight is the credits roll.
Which bosses can you actually skip?
Plenty of them. The mandatory spine is short: Wall of Flesh, all three mechs, Plantera, Golem, Lunatic Cultist, Moon Lord. Everything else is optional in the strict sense, though several "optional" bosses drop gear so good that skipping them makes the required fights much harder.
- Worth doing even though optional: your world-evil boss (for ore), Skeletron (for the Dungeon), Empress of Light and Duke Fishron (for endgame weapons that trivialize Moon Lord).
- Genuinely skippable: King Slime, Queen Slime, and Deerclops if you are speed-focused. Fun, not load-bearing.
Gear checkpoints, in one glance
If you only remember five armor milestones, remember these: Molten before the Wall of Flesh, Cobalt/Palladium right after it, Adamantite/Titanium before the mechs, Hallowed before Plantera, and Beetle, Shroomite, Spectre, or Stardust before Moon Lord. Match the class of armor to your weapon type and you will out-tier every fight on this list at the moment you reach it.
