WoW Forever Skyborne Race: Racials, Classes, Price

The Skyborne are neutral elves from Zephras Isle, and they cost $29.99. Every racial, the class list per faction, and whether the pack is worth it.

The Skyborne are the only new playable race in World of Warcraft: Forever, they can join either faction, and you cannot play one on a subscription alone. They are gated behind the Skyborne Heroic Pack at $29.99, which is the cheapest of the three upgrade packs and the first time in the game's history that a race has been sold separately from an expansion.

That last part is why half the discussion about them right now is about money rather than about elves. Worth separating the two, because the race itself is more interesting than the argument around it.

Who they are

Skyborne are elves from Zephras Isle, a floating island Blizzard describes as newly discovered. The lore attaches them to Highborne exiles who made a pact with the wind elementals of Skywall generations ago, which is what the flight imagery and the elemental theming in their kit is drawing on. Treat the specifics of that backstory as preview material rather than settled canon: it comes from BlizzCon coverage, not from a written Blizzard lore page, and Blizzard has not published the full history yet.

Mechanically, the thing that sets them apart from every other race in the game is that they are neutral. You pick Alliance or Horde at character creation, and that choice changes two things: which of two classes you can take, and one of your four racial abilities.

The four racials

Forever rebuilt racials across the board. Every race in the game now has exactly two active abilities and two passive ones, tuned to give comparable offensive value while keeping the utility each race was known for. The Skyborne were built to that spec from the start.

AbilityTypeEffectWho gets it

Elemental InsightPassiveDamage to Elementals increased by 5%Both factions
Read Ley LineActiveActivate a ley line for 100% increased health and mana regenerationAlliance only
SkysightActiveAn Elemental Blessing granting 10% increased run speedHorde only

Read Walk on Air carefully, because the name oversells it. It is a controlled descent, not flight and not ascent. You will use it to get off a cliff you climbed, not to get onto one. In a game built around a world you traverse on foot at vanilla pace, that is still a real quality-of-life racial, just not the one people are imagining.

Wind Blessed is the one that will matter at level 60. One percent haste across melee, ranged and casting is small, but it is universal, and it is the rare racial that does not go dead depending on what you rolled. Elemental Insight is a 5% damage bonus against a creature type, which means it swings between irrelevant and quite good depending entirely on what Blizzard puts in the two raids opening on December 9.

The faction split is the part worth thinking about before you commit. Read Ley Line is a downtime tool, which in a game targeting roughly 10 to 15 seconds to kill an ordinary creature means real time saved while levelling. Skysight is 10% run speed, which is the single most valuable thing you can have in a world with no flying and a long wait for a ground mount. Neither is a trap. Horde's is better before 40; Alliance's is better if you are a mana class grinding solo.

Classes, and the two the faction decides

Both factions get the same four:

  • Warrior
  • Hunter
  • Rogue
  • Druid

Then it splits. Alliance Skyborne can be Mages. Horde Skyborne can be Shamans. You do not get to choose which, and you cannot get both on one faction, so if you rolled Skyborne specifically to play one of those two, that decision is made for you at character creation rather than later.

Druid is the pick Blizzard spent its demo time on. Skyborne Druids get shapeshift forms built for the race rather than reskinned Night Elf ones. The BlizzCon build showed Bear, Cat, Travel and Moonkin. That was a playable demo, not a finished art pass, so treat the exact look as subject to change.

The Skyborne are also part of a wider loosening. Forever adds six new race and class combinations to the existing roster: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin, with Blizzard saying more are planned. The full race and class matrix has every combination in one table, and our classes page covers what changed inside the nine classes themselves.

Zephras Isle

Zephras Isle is a levels 1 to 12 starting experience, entirely separate from the classic starter zones. You do the Skyborne origin chain there, learn who they are, and then leave for Azeroth proper like everyone else.

Twelve levels is short. It is roughly the length of a vanilla starting zone and its immediate follow-on, and at the pace Forever is targeting it is a couple of evenings. That matters to the value question below, because a good chunk of what $29.99 buys is content you will see once per character and never again.

Zephras Isle is one of Forever's three new zones, not a bonus on top of them. The other two, The Riverglades at 30 to 45 and Mount Hyjal, are open to everyone.

The thirty dollar question

Here is the part the packs pages do not say out loud: the Skyborne are the only content in Forever behind a paywall. Everything else, the three new zones, the nine dungeons, the raids, the 1,000-plus new quests, the whole 1 to 60 rebuild, comes with a standard subscription. One race and one twelve-level island do not.

That is a defensible structure and an unpopular one, and both things are true at once. It is defensible because nobody is locked out of the game or of progression by skipping it. It is unpopular because a race has never been priced this way before in WoW, and because $29.99 is not an impulse number.

Our read: buy it if you specifically want to play a Skyborne Druid or to see Zephras Isle, and skip it otherwise. The racials are fine. They are not best in slot for anything, and a 1% haste passive will not out-earn picking a race you actually want to look at for two hundred hours. If you were going to roll Human or Orc anyway, the pack buys you cosmetics you did not ask for.

One genuine reason to buy it that has nothing to do with the race: the Heroic Pack includes early name reservation, which runs October 27 to November 3. On a brand-new population with no realms to spread names across, that window is the one time-limited thing in the entire pre-purchase. If you care about a specific name, $29.99 is the cheapest door.

If you want beta access instead, the Heroic Pack does not include it. That starts at the $59.99 Epic Pack, and we walk through whether that is worth it on the beta access page.

What is still unconfirmed

  • Whether the Skyborne racials survive to launch unchanged. These were shown in the playable BlizzCon build, and Blizzard has not published a final racial page.
  • The Druid form art beyond the four shown.
  • Whether the Skyborne will be buyable separately from the Heroic Pack later, or unlocked another way.
  • Full Skyborne lore. What is circulating is coverage of a panel, not a Blizzard lore article.

We will update this page as the beta fills those gaps in. The Forever FAQ covers the rest of the questions people are asking this week, and the hub tracks the countdown to November 4.
