Choosing Your Base Location
Base placement in Enshrouded matters more than most survival games. Your Flame Altar defines your territory, and you can only build within its radius. Picking the right spot saves you hours of rebuilding later.
Here are our top picks for every stage of the game, tested on our dedicated servers.
Early Game: Springlands
Near the Starting Flame Altar (Best for Beginners)
The area around your first Flame Altar is the safest place in Embervale. No Shroud, minimal enemies, and flat terrain for easy building.
Pros:
- Safe from Shroud and dangerous enemies
- Flat terrain for simple construction
- Close to basic resources (wood, stone, plant fiber)
- Near the first NPCs you unlock
- Good for learning building mechanics
Cons:
- Far from mid/late-game resources
- Limited crafting materials nearby
- You'll eventually need forward bases
Building tip: Don't over-invest here. Build a functional workshop with crafting stations and storage. You'll want to move your main base forward as you progress.
Hilltop Overlooking Springlands
Find an elevated hill in the Springlands for a panoramic view of the starting region. These spots give natural defense and stunning views.
Pros:
- Natural defense (enemies struggle with elevation)
- Great visibility of surrounding area
- Impressive builds with scenic backdrops
- Still in the safe starting zone
Cons:
- Requires flatten tool for building surfaces
- Longer runs to resource nodes
- Can be tricky to build large structures on slopes
Building tip: Carve into the hillside to create a combined above-ground/underground base. Use the hill itself as your back wall.
Mid Game: Revelwood
Revelwood Clearing
Revelwood opens up after defeating early bosses. The clearings between forests offer excellent mid-game base locations.
Pros:
- Access to tier 2 crafting materials
- Near key NPC unlock locations
- Dense forests provide wood supply
- Multiple Shroud zones nearby for exploration
- Central map location
Cons:
- Tougher enemies roam the area
- Some Shroud creep near forest edges
- Less flat than Springlands
Building tip: Build a walled compound with crafting stations, a Flame Altar, and a respawn point. This becomes your staging area for Shroud runs. Store spare gear and consumables here.
Elevated Ridge Between Biomes
The ridgelines between Springlands and Revelwood offer strategic positions with access to both regions' resources.
Pros:
- Quick access to both early and mid-game zones
- Natural vantage point
- Defensible position
- Beautiful building opportunities
Cons:
- Narrow build area on some ridges
- May need creative structural support
Late Game: Kindlewastes
Kindlewastes Outpost
The Kindlewastes is Enshrouded's endgame zone — volcanic, dangerous, and full of the best resources. You need a forward base here.
Pros:
- Proximity to endgame materials and bosses
- Access to the highest-tier crafting
- Impressive volcanic aesthetic for builds
- Close to Deep Shroud zones
Cons:
- Dangerous enemies everywhere
- Harsh environment
- Requires strong gear to survive
- Far from starting areas
Building tip: This should be a fortified outpost, not your main base. Focus on a Flame Altar (respawn), storage chests, a crafting station for quick repairs, and a bed. Keep it functional.
Near a Shroud Root (Temporary Forward Base)
Place a small base near a Shroud Root you're preparing to clear. This is a tactical choice, not a permanent home.
Pros:
- Minimizes run time to the Root
- Respawn point right next to the action
- Store backup gear for repeated attempts
Cons:
- Temporary by nature (clear the Root, move on)
- Enemies nearby
- Minimal building investment
Multi-Base Strategy (Dedicated Server)
On a dedicated server, you can place multiple Flame Altars across the map. The optimal strategy for a group:
- Main Base (Springlands/Revelwood) — all crafting stations, storage, NPCs, the "home base"
- Revelwood Outpost — mid-game staging area for Shroud exploration
- Kindlewastes Forward Base — endgame crafting and respawn near bosses
- Shroud Edge Camps — small temporary bases near active Shroud Roots
With 16 players on a server, coordinate base locations so the group covers different regions. One player shouldn't build a massive base blocking a shared Flame Altar slot.
Building Tips for All Locations
- Level the ground first using the flatten tool before placing foundations
- Build walls before roofs — structural stability flows upward from the foundation
- Place your Flame Altar centrally to maximize the build radius
- Use terrain as walls — build into hillsides to save materials and gain natural protection
- Light everything — torches and braziers prevent dark corners where you can't see enemies
- Back up your world before major building projects on your HostedGG server — one misclick with the pickaxe can undo hours of work
